Giacc raring to go Published: 29 August, 2014 by Oscar Chamberlain Italian happy to be back in action. Emanuele Giaccherini is raring to go following a return from injury, setting his sights on Saturdayâs opponents Queenâs Park Rangers. The Italian made his comeback in Wednesdayâs 3-0 win over Birmingham City, gliding the length of the field to set up Connor Wickhamâs first goal of the season and the Black Cats third of the night. Next up for Gus Poyetâs side is a trip to Loftus Road, and Giaccherini is confident that if Sunderland perform they will emerge victorious. âWe hope to win on Saturday and I am really looking forward to it - if we win it will turn a good start into a great start. âIt will be a different game to Wednesday but I believe if we play well we will have a very good chance of winning.â The diminutive winger enjoyed an impressive pre-season campaign and he believes he will improve after settling in to the English game. âI had a good pre-season and I stayed very well but in the last game I was injured â this is football. âThis year I will try to improve on last season, I now have one âyear experience and I think I will do better this year. He added: âThis football is different to Italian football but last year I improved my game, my movement and my understanding with the team.â
Poyet not afraid to ring changes Published: 29 August, 2014 by Oscar Chamberlain Head coach impressed by debutants and comeback Giacc. Gus Poyet admitted that Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Birmingham City formed part of a trial run for the players who want to feature against Queens Park Rangers. The head coach made six changes for the Capital One Cup trip to St Andrew’s, with the likes of Costel Pantilimon, Billy Jones and Jordi Gomez impressing on their first starts for the club. Speaking to safc.com, Poyet revealed that Wednesday’s match was the perfect opportunity for players to earn their place in the squad to face QPR. “Players need to play – Costel Pantilimon, Billy Jones, Liam Bridcutt, Jordi Gomez and Jozy Altidore are all pushing for starts –we did not change the team to make it weaker. “The changes were to give the players a chance to show who I should pick on the bench and in the team when we play on Saturday.” One man who could feature against the R’s is Emanuele Giaccherini who returned from injury in the win at St Andrew’s, and he made an immediate impact seizing possession in his own half before running the length of the pitch and playing in Connor Wickham, who slotted home the Black Cat’s fourth. The head coach was pleased to see the Italian return following an excellent pre-season campaign, praising his role in Sunderland’s final goal. The idea was to get Emanuele back so that is why he was the first change. “He was determined to be in the squad and be in the team but an injury meant he couldn’t, so we wanted to make him feel part of the group again.” He added: “The most pleasing things were that the team tried to pass the ball for Jordi to score, the action for the second goal and the third one which was probably the best of the three.”
