Gerry Gow has been granted a testimonial match at Ashton Gate on Saturday, July 28th, which is sure to be a star-studded occasion. The tough-tackling Glaswegian midfielder made 445 appearances for City between 1969 and 1981 before being transferred to Manchester City, in an attempt to balance the books. Consequently despite his lengthy service he was never handed a testimonial - until now.

Former Bristol City stars Brian Tinnion and 'Jacki' Dziekanowski will make an emotional return to Ashton Gate later this summer. The pair will roll back the years when appearing in a testimonial match in support of Robins legend Gerry Gow.

What a chance to see some of our legends in action to support Gerry, don't know who they are playing yet but there is a rumour it could be Manchester City, only a rumour.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says: 'I remember Gerry when I was manager of St Mirren and we played in the Anglo Scottish Cup final against Bristol City. Unfortunately we lost that game, but Gerry was always a tenacious tackler, a determined little lad who did not have a physique that would frighten you but he was a terrier, a real terrier."

    Can't wait...

*** The opposution will be a Man City 11...'It is perhaps fitting the new Barclays Premier League champions will provide the opposition for 59-year-old Gerry's testimonial game, albeit one made up of past stars and famous guest players.

The same applies to the Bristol City XI, with greats Brian Tinnion and Darius 'Jacki' Dziekanowski already confirming they will play in the game, flying in from Spain and Poland respectively to do so. '

I would walk thru walls to get to this one.

Gerry is possibly THE most influential player in the history of our club (ok all you Atyeo fanatics, the second) and if I had my way there would be a stand in the new ground called The Gow End.

I couldn't care who we play, just to see Gerry there in our midfield one more time would be priceless.
And by the way.....doesn't he just deserve it !

    Can't wait.

As a 'young' City fan by most standards this is still tremendously significant for me and it's occasions like these that really bring support together. Not to mention it looks like one hell of a line-up are making the effort for him.

How nice it is to see that we have finally become a team that feels that it is important to honour our legends, and Gerry was definitely one of them. Living where I do will not allow me to be there but I hope a good crowd turn out for the game so we can show our new boss that we care about our team and it's heroes.

Have a great day Gerry because you certainly gave us many.

Neither will I be able to go but will make enquiries about how to donate.
So many memories and in the picture in Wize's post #1 is his finger actually up Kenny Stephens' nose?

During that dramatic first season up with the gods, the whole team came to my works social club in aid of Taints testimonial. Big Cheese was complaining about his knee injury (before it forced him to retire) so Gerry rolled up both trouser legs and showed us the four scars where he'd had cartilages removed, followed by the comment in broad Glaswegian "Cheese you're just a big ****ing baby!"

Thanks Gerry and all the others in that squad for the memories.
