Gerrard rarely does it in the big games. 1 goal in 31 appearances v Chelsea and went eight years without scoring v United

Why would I be biased in favour of Vieira and Petit (Arsenal) and Essien (Chelsea). Oh yes, and Alonso (LIVERPOOL!!)

You really think he's better than double winning, World Cup winning and European Championship winning Emmanuel Petit?

Or Roy Keane who captained United to 7 league titles, 4 FA Cups and a European Cup in 11 years.

Don't put him in the top 3 of all time but he was a brilliant midfielder when he was younger.

    Big fish small pond.

Looked good in a team when surrounded by crap but even Lucas is 2x the player Gerrard is now.

Paul Scholes at 37 is better than Gerrard was in his prime, if you can find a "prime" for such an underwhelming player like Gerrard.

Not sure about that tbh. He's one of the most talented, but imo he has suffered for playing for Liverpool. They've dumped him in so many different positions over the years - right wing, right back, second striker etc etc that he hasn't made the same impact as players like Scholes, Keane, Vieira, Petit, Makalele and Lampard. Even Alonso probably had more of an impact during his time at the club, as he made the CM role his own and Gerrard got shuffled out to the wing as a result.

Also worth nothing that whilst Gerrard has won games for Liverpool, most obviously the big two in 05 and 06, he's never really shown the leadership or consistency they needed to actually win the title. In fact, he's arguably a symbol of everything wrong with Liverpool's league performances over the past decade - always able to raise their game and compete with the big boys, but always in danger of going missing against the small clubs and not putting the effort in that's needed to win the vital games to really challenge for the title.

Agreed, the way the media cream themselves towards him, you would've thought it was Messi that was playing Liverpool.

I suppose it depends on who is doing the 'rating' and at what period in his career they are judging him as to whether he is overrated or not!

For me, it is quite obvious that he is not the player that he was, as is the case with most players in their 30's...so I don't personally think he is overrated now because I have the common sense to understand that as players go past their prime then their ability and form deteriorates, it's not difficult to understand really! As for when he was in his prime, he was one of the best players in the PL imo, possibly even the best for a couple of years!

Anyway, obviously this has turned into a hate-fest, I even read someone say that Petit was better than him, I guess everyone has an opinion...

The OP says he is overrated, but what is the barometer that he is using? His own anti-Liverpool one?

No, just look at the way pundits, the media and the press react to him.

Like who? Give me some examples.

He was one of the best players in the league, and he is now still a very good player...the sad thing about this is that you actually know it, but cannot bring yourself to admit it!

What is your actual opinion? You seem happy enough to suggest he is overrated by pundits etc, but you don't give your own thoughts...do you have any?

Giggs is spunked over by the media, yet he is playing terribly imo...the same can be said of Scholes with regards to the media reaction to him,, yes he has steadied the ship with regards to United's midfield, but does making 40 5-yard passes and scoring the odd goal deserve the hype that he is getting?

By the way, did Scholes give back the money he got from his testimonial?

He was a great player in his day, he blew his career by not joining a club capable of winning titles

Some do, did Scholes? All of it?

Because of his media shyness he probably didn't advertise the fact if it went to charity, but on the same note he didn't advertise the fact that he may well have kept it all!

    Do you know the answer?

Why would he anyway, a testimonial is for ten years service not for retirement? I based my opinion that he is over rated on the definition of the word, not on his current, general or past form but on how he is rated as player. It is my belief that he is a very good player, at times for a brief period excellent. But there is on way on this earth he is as good as he's made out to be, no way. He had a good two year sell in which he contributed largely to Liverpool winning the CL and an fa cup. Apart from that he has frankly achieved **** all. THAT is why he is over rated.
