In hospital might have to have his leg amputated. Just finished his coaching badges and was trying to get a managers /coaching job. Remember him and his father Ray playing for the Rovers and of course his brother who played for the city. Gary hope they manage to save the leg and even though you have said it will finish your coaching ambitions I hope that a club somewhere in this country can offer you a job and utilise your great experience. we know you will never be fully fit owing to your illness but I wish you all the very best and hope you are soon out of hospital and on the road to better health
Some people think Diabetics can be sorted by eating the right foods and not having sugary foods/drinks. Or they got that way because of eating/drinking the bad foods! Thats type 2 diabetics. People who are Type 1 diabetic - like Gary Mabbutt - are diabetic because their pancreas stopped working which is not caused by eating/drinking the wrong things. Type 1 and type 2 are not the same. Type 1 is by far the worse. Type 2 is treated by tablets. If you dont take your tablets then you still live but will become ill. Type 1 is treated with insulin injections/pump. I you dont take the insulin, you will die after falling into a diabetic coma. Type 1 diabetic can have toes, feet, legs amputated because of their condition, especially if you have poor control over your sugar levels which can be no fault at all of the person. Could be eating/drinking the right things and excerising doing everything perfectly correct. But your body sometimes fights against you and things like whats happened to Mabbutt happens. I get pissed off when people who have no clue about diabetes (often the press with their stupid stories) who thinks people who are diabetic is of their own doing. Wrong wrong wrong. There is not enough awareness around diabetes. I have to live with this everyday. Get well soon Gary.
Cjs My best Wishes for Gary Mabbutt are not a flippant comment but a genuine desire for a great sportsman to have an improvement in a bad situation. I was not trying to trivialise his illness and if that was the impression that my post gave then I apologise to Gary and all suffers of Diabetes
old timer, nothing in my post was directed at you in any way at all Not aimed at anyone on here full stop. Just frustrated that im sure some (maybe not on here) will say or think its Mabbutts own fault because he ate or drank the wrong things, purely basing that opinion on lack of awareness of the life threatening disease that it is. There is not a single thing that Mabbutt could change about his past that would change his miss-fortune of getting Type 1 diabetes. Its was out of his control and the only thing he can do about it is manage it the best he can with the help an advice of his consultants which he should be seeing every 6 months and even that is not always enough support. I didnt even know Mabbutt had this operation until you made this thread. I join you old timer in wishing Mabbutt well in his recovery
Would it be to much to hope that the clubs he served with distinction and always gave everything for could help out in someway. he was a great player for Rovers and Tottenham. Surely his experience and service to either one of these clubs could be rewarded. Tottenham are a big club with what I believe is a good youth setup and Sky Premiership payments. An ex player of this Quality with his coaching badges would be a great asset woudnt it
He was always a role model for other diabetes sufferers. It's a horrible disease and unfortunately it can result in circulatory and limb problems in later life. Let's hope he makes a good recovery. Get well soon, Gary.
Yep. I remember being in Frenchay hospital many years ago in my late teens and the diabetic clinic was like a hut/cabin. His picture was up on the wall but in his spurs kit. Young kids who are sufferers would see that picture of a prem football who has what they have and was still able to pursue his dream, not letting it get in the way.
