the point about more goal threat from midfield is valid. snodgrass is a major goal threat. bennett, you would think, will do better than the solitary goal, pilks is more than capable of netting 5-10 goals again, butterfield scores goals, hoolahan, surman... these players all score goals. add to that holt (10+) morison (6+) vaughan (if he stays 6+) and i would say that's around 50 odd goals, even being modest with their totals.
...or you could look at it more positively and say we've effectively got a new signing in james vaughan. you choose to be negative in your viewpoint. either way, it makes little difference in regards signing rhodes.
Yep, let`s move onto Bridcutt We need an out and out DM and he is the lad for us IMO. This view is shared by more of us, than on JR.
That's a fair point about the lack of attacking options Worthy had YL, though I'd personally never want us to rest on our laurels and I'd like to see us try to strengthen our squad whenever possible if someone good enough becomes available at the right price - though obviously never to the extent of putting our financial situation in peril. Totally agree that 30k a week is out of our range and wouldn't want us to pay more than 22k a week, and I accept that might not be enough to attract him (crazy as that sounds!) and if that truly is what he's after then I also would say "thanks, but no thanks".
If we play 4-3-3 with Pilkington, Holt and Snodgrass up front, all three would reach double figures for sure.
I have a feeling that we are on the verge of a rather large signing, not sure if it is Rhodes but it seems that we are trying to offload some of our players to raise some funds for someone. If it is true about Vaughan and Morison and we agree fees etc, there must be something big in the pipeline. Vaughan has looked really sharpe in pre-season and Morison gave us a good return last season, despite the way he comes accross when he plays. If we are going to be moving these players on we must have something in the pipeline and to be honest I struggle to think that it is Rhodes. Why would you offload a proven PL striker in Morison to replace him with a striker that has only proved themselves in L1 level? It's too much of a risk for me, especially if he gets injured. There must be something else going on in the background that we don't know about.
we've been linked to the austrian centre back dragovic from basel. now THAT would be a coup - he is top notch, but i really can't see us paying £5m+ for a defender, especially if it involves offloading strikers to afford it!! wishful thinking from whoever came up with the link i expect personally, i think we will get a striker in (i didn't think we would until the last couple of days) but i think it will be a loan forward rather than a purchase
Can I just add that West Sham were never really interested in signing Carroll, and they were never, ever, ever going to offer him anything like a six-figure salary, that was nothing more than bluster and bollocks from their less than scrupulous owners to try to get the fans excited - I thought you'd have seen straight through that one Supers? Also I see a lot of pressure being put on Snodgrass to deliver goals as well, this on the back of only one good season in the Championship (two seasons in total at that level, the rest of his career has been League One or lower). And finally can I offer up a sincere apology to Javier Garrido for hi-jacking a thread that was supposed to be dedicated to him
Am I allowed to possibly suggest that for a mod of a debating forum I find that a rather simplistic and, dare I say it, narrow minded view to have. Sounds a bit like the kid who's **** at football taking his ball hiome so nobody else can play. There ARE plenty of other threads with plenty of of other subject matters so it's not as if this is the only thing we're talking about. If you don't want to debate this then look the other way and don't, however some of us clearly feel our points aren't really being taken on board and answered - like for example who you think we should be looking to sign if Rhodes is sch an absolute, definite 100% non-starter?
Dragovic would be fantastic and just maybe it makes sense in terms of Hughtons thinking. A much stronger back four, we'd nick points from games we lost last year and certainly have a better goals against column. It is also quite a tradtional way of developing team, get the back four right and the rest will follow. The level of confidence that it would give the midfield to attack, rather than be in two minds is invaluable. Maybe we sufficient fire power and creativity in the team and a very solid back line, would allow them to play. Not saying a defensive midfielder is not needed, but Bridcutt, the few times I've seem him, I've not been that impressed, but that could be off games the 5 or 6 times I've seen him, only twice live (misfortune to have friends in Brighton and got dragged to a couple of games last season).
i agree, they did it as a publicity stunt more than anything but they did announce they were prepared to pay that and lets face it, they pay huge wages and fees, even if they never intended to in this case. also, they DID make a loan bid as liverpool announced they did and west ham offered to pay all his wages. he is on around £60k basic salary a week at liverpool i believe, so he's not exactly cheap. my point being, if a club who splash cash like there is no tomorrow is put off by rhodes asking price, is it any wonder more prudently run clubs shy away too?
Sorry Dave if that was a bit over the top, it possibly came across the wrong way and I absolutely most definitely am not suggesting you are **** at debating - far from it in fact so I hope you didn't read it that way as it wasn't not it was intended
I'm not trying to be argumentative but can you find any official publicly made information about his wages? I'm pretty sure it's hearsay. Huddersfield know what they're doing. Just wait and see how it goes is my mantra, we can certainly live without him, he just strikes me as a player that would play very well for us.
i can ask a large number of journalists to correspond with you if you like? they all know how much he earns and are all consistent with the amount, precise in fact. even sections of the press have announced that rhodes will nearly double his wage packet if a move to blackburn comes to anything. they are set to offer him £40k a week. the terms offered by blackburn may or may not be true but its common knowledge of what he is currently on and its been that way since the january window
