EXCLUSIVE: QPR and Stoke to battle for Gareth Barry's signature after Man City release.

QPR and Stoke are ready to battle Everton for free transfer Gareth Barry.

    By Harry Pratt/Published 7th June 2014

The England midfielder, 33, is up for grabs on the summer market after being released by Premier League champions Manchester City.

And while Everton boss Roberto Martinez, who had Barry (below) on loan last season, is at the head of the queue, he can expect a scrap from several rivals also in the hunt.

Barry was exceptional last term at Goodison Park and proved that, in spite being let go by City, he can still cut it.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes, who in 2009 took Barry from Aston Villa to City for £12million, would love to bring him to the Britannia Stadium as he continues to transform the Potters squad.

And Sparky is not alone in his admiration of the player as QPR counterpart Harry Redknapp is also monitoring developments.

After steering the Hoops back into the Premier League via the play-offs, Redknapp is desperate to add reinforcements.

One possible hitch for the trio of English clubs is the lure of a lucrative move to America’s Major League Soccer for Barry.

As with Lampard, I'd take him on a 1 year contract.

If he was good enough to help run Everton's midfield last year, he'll be good enough for us next year.

I'd take him on a 1 year deal (subject to reasonable wage demands), we need a DM & would certainly fit the bill as a short term solution.

If were playing 4231, we need 3 or 4 players like that to compete for the 2. Not players like henry who can't pass wind.

Barry's too old but we need to replace Jenas, O'Neil and henry.

Perspective guys, firstly people should know that what a lazy journalist writes isn't necessarily true. Secondly, just because we have had more than our fair share of ageing players and some have been poor, that doesn't mean that any new ones will be or that their attitudes wont be better than in the past. You have to give people a chance before writing them off. We all want young emerging players to be signed, but we still do need good experienced players to replace some of the ageing players we have who will probably be leaving.

There's a fine balance and it's a tough job to do it right, but Rednapp did just about get it right last season, say what you like about him [flyer] et all, but he kept Zamora when most felt he was passed it, but despite that he stayed and the rest as they say is history. So I think people need to forget the season under Hughes and start looking forward. Gareth Barry is a very good player and as long as the contract is right, he would be a great asset for a couple of seasons.

Would be fantastic signing for any newly promoted club but it's have to be on a 1 year contract at around 30-40k a week and he's not going to sign for that. Anything above that is paying over the top.
