I have mentioned before seeing Free's first gig in Sunderland at the Bay , only a few monday night diehards were there as the band were totally unknown at the time, some jokers turned up thinking it was literally free, at about 2/6 it was not too bad considering. You could stand within touching distance of the groups at the Bay on a quiet night and you could see they were only kids, they were a brilliant live band, but it was PK who stole the show, propped up by his amp and muttering to himself all night he never once opened his eyes, I told my mates the day after they had to see this fantastic blind kid who was the real deal in one the best blues band arround. A few days later they were playing in a pub in Barnard Castle I think it was, and we went through to see them. It was a tiny place with about 30 punters in the room , and as they set up in the corner PK beamed over and started to laugh, but I never found out if he had been play acting the week before, or whether it was just my imagination. But they were a fantastic band far better live than their recordings indicate and their gigs in Sunderland were memorable occasions. An interview was played this morning on radio 4 and Andy mentioned his early days with the band being some of his happiest and they certainly encapsulated the spirit of the time as anybody who saw them will confirm, happy days indeed. RIP Andy.

His bass riffs in Mr Big were unique, took the lead from Kossoff.
