The Curbs thread mentioned football phone-ins a few times but I thought it deserved its own thread. I used to love 606 when Danny Baker was the host. He is a proper football fan, and was always interested in the stories and views of other real fans. It was OK under Bob "the Cat" Bevan and Duncan McKenzie too but has gone downhill so much that I rarely bother to listen to it. Last time I listened, practically the whole show was about the Suarez biting incident, the host, whoever he was, was apoplectic about it and was ready to pick a fight with anyone who wasn't as apoplectic as he was. The basic trouble I have with 606 is that it is hosted by opinionated experts who'd rather talk about who Arsenal or Manure should sign rather than listen to fans who have actually been to follow their team.
Just out of interest, SuperC, do you still listen to 606? My point is that the stars of the show now are the presenters, which I started to find boring years ago which is why I stopped listening. When Danny Baker did it the stars were the fans who phoned in.
Only when in the back of a black cab it seems! Stopped listening to the radio a while ago. Though it's nowhere near the same, I have SSN on repeat all day every day.
606 is patronising crap... Very poor when they do mention lower league football it's all very smug. One plus the awful Alan Green has stopped doing 606 on Sunday he was the pits.
The delivery on 'Non-League Day' this season was toe-curlingly awful - as if it was some primitive form of the sport. Problem with these people is that they've been seduced by the Premiership b******t machine into thinking it's the only league worth watching.
Part of the problem is that it now emanates from media city which is probably to close to old trafford for anything other than prawn sandwich punditry. I know danny baker had a frequent dig at us but he he is at least open about his support for the wall unlike some other commentators who feign a lack of bias and just insult us by ignorance. I still listen on my way home from the valley but have to make significant effort not suffer from radio rage whilst driving the M11. The "doc savage " section is so puerile and egotistical i frequently feel the need to listen to rap fm or even radio cambridgeshire!
It is so condescending to most of the football league clubs I don't listen to it anymore.Anything with Robbie Savage on I will not watch or listen to.The man is an absolute bell end.
You mean Robbie"I've played 623 league games so I know better than you" Savage? A perfect example of what's wrong with phone-ins. IMO fans have every right to sound off about their own club even if they're talking rubbish in someone else's opinion. Recently I've read a couple of "experts" having a pop at Stoke fans who dare to complain about the Pulis style of play, it just doesn't occur to them that the Stoke fans pay their money and watch their team week in week out, so maybe they have a point.
That is the whole purpose of a radio phone in.Fans venting their spleen after a poor performance,or praising the lads after a good display. Some fans talk a lot of crap, but most of the time the adrenalin is flowing and they just want a forum to sound off.Pretty much like these football forums.
Yesterday was the first 606 I've heard in a while. Fair play to the Man City fans. All of them started by congratulating Wigan, saying they deserved to win, and almost all of them wanted to keep Mancini. I guess they haven't picked up enough 'glory' fans yet.
Our two Man City fans at work have been supporting for 20+ years and are treating the current money-drenched phase as a passing but much welcome phenomenon. They're enjoying themselves but know it can't last forever. What keeps them grounded is the thought that if the sheiks pull out, there's going to be an almighty exodus of players who've gone there simply for the cash and the club will have to go through a painful restructuring which could take several seasons. They are both full of praise for Mancini but look on his future as 'limited' and neither of them were very impressed at him bottling the choice of keeper yesterday, which I have to say I found astonishing. City have never had trouble attracting fans, just accommodating them, and I think you're right IA there's not a lot of plastics there.
