Just having breakfast and skipping through the BBC Football page. The first item was about Villa and their cup defeat to Chelsea ... they're furious! This is Villa who were recently dreadful and likely to be in a relegation battle. They're now playing great football and 4th in the PL with a chance of the Champions League.

Makes you wonder if supporters are ever really content, the first comment says their display, against Chelsea, was 'totally unacceptable' ...

... I've absolutely no idea what that means tbh, surely acceptance isn't an option after the event.

'We asked for your thoughts on Chelsea's 3-1 win over Aston Villa in Wednesday night's FA Cup action.'

Here are some of your comments:

    Aston Villa fans

Ian: No energy, no movement and no ideas. A really poor performance. Man at the back walking with the ball. Chelsea just dominated midfield with no Villa player close to them. Totally unacceptable!

Football is just too important an outlet for some people and they deflect the frustrations of their life on to it, it seems.

Interesting topic Smug. I think the general feeling around a club regarding it's progress/standing in the league and the reaction to a defeat are largely abstract in nature. We all react to what we see over 90 mins with joy, fury or indifference depending on what's happened on the pitch and that can vary massively from your feelings about the club in general.

We could be top of the league, into the latter rounds of the CL with Jude, Foden and Mbappe as our front line, but a home defeat to the Saudis would bring about a meltdown in the fanbase...for a few days anyway until the fury died down and we all returned to normal.

Conversely, I remember that horrific season when Coleman was in charge and we were slipping into L1 without a fight. I was at the Derby away game where we won 4-1 and people were dancing in the streets, hugging random strangers and drinking into the night even though we knew we were likely going down.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that football results and the current status of your club can be two different things. I also imagine, in this case that the Villa fans thought they were already through and were booking Wembley hotels etc

Villas boss has done a great job, so their fans should be over the moon.

It’s amazing how life as a Footie Manager can change so quickly after a heavy loss to The CRAAS and a cup defeat to Chelski, who overall have been poor this season, as Poch strives to find a blend that might keep him in a job.

So yes, 2 games Villa fans would have just been expecting to turn up for 2 wins.

2 defeats later and it’s all doom & gloom.

Who’d be a Footie Manager? Not me!!

    It's quite simple really
Win and everything in the garden is rosy.
Draw just keep pottering about in the garden.
Lose and your garden is full of weeds and nettles.
Lose to a near rival and your garden is full of triffids

That depends upon your outlook really. Lose and I look for the positives from a defeat. Always have. It’s my optimistic nature!!

We literally have fans who are “win and the garden is still full of nettles”!

Is there a more volatile career than football management, player and to a great degree supporter (which obviously isn't a career, it's far more important than that).
The rollercoaster of emotions is off the scales at both ends at times, when I was a child/youth I couldn't see beyond the team in red and white stripes, couldn't appreciate the other team when we got beat, it was always one of my teams fault, now in my dotage I smile at some of the comments seen on here and football sites after a weekend of matches,. I oft times wonder what a head shrink would make if it all.
People fall out over what in the grand scheme of things is very little indeed and I do find it a bit rich to see Premiership fans squirmimg when they're side are struggling, they should be made to watch teams from leagues 1&2 and then thank their lucky stars.

Losing in the league to Cheltenham Town. Grim. We’ve had a decent couple of years since.

Remember we went a hole 12 months without winning a home game. Think we broke it against Fulham 1.0 maja. Could be wrong.
It seemed every home game was same, we'd start on front foot, not score and then the opposition would score with first attempt and we'd crumble. We have short memories but we were an absolute shambles then and for all the negativity now we are light years from that. It's all relative I guess but I'm delighted with with progress we are making and defeats now aren't as painful as they were when we were a shambles.

We also have some fans that are happy when we lose as it justifies their position.
OK maybe I'm being a bit cynical there, but, you know...

but just like the op even a team that’s doing as good as villa still has fans wanting more and saying they’re not good enough. We aren’t special we have a fair few morons but I like to think the majority are decent.

I reckon they aren’t happy when we lose but make themselves happier by doing the old ‘I told you so’ routine. Repeatedly.

Didn't Marcus or Gordon say traffic increased on the match day thread as soon as boro scored? People keep their opinions to themselves until something goes wrong?

As I've aged, the pain of a loss dwindles. This season before Beale I was always looking forward to our next game regardless of the previous result. The bitterness on here towards Beale numbed my feelings, but I'm glad to say I'm back on track and looking forward to Saturday.

    Hhhaaawwwwaaaaayyyyyyy the lads

    I can't wait for Saturday tbh ...

... I've lived through a hundred times worse than where we are now.

It's guaranteed one of our players will have a moment of true quality every game ...

... there's been time when I'd have settled for that in a season <laugh>

I love match day the build up excitement then the drama. As folk have said I take losing a lot more easier and try and find positives to take into the next match there’s always next week,
When I was serving me time and we lost there was one bloke would come into work and say that was crap the wife started so I threw me dinner up the wall the poor bugger was for ever decorating

Yeah but it was Smug who pointed it out v Boro. It did and does. When we concede in an away game, we’ll get about 30 posts. When we score, about 10-15. (Labelling away games as I am not on here for the home games as I’m there and have no signal!)

Losses always provide way more posts too, and “poor result” draws. Seems some people expect a win, so say nothing if we do, but vehemently put their points across if we lose!

Aging hasn’t numbed my feelings on a loss!! 48 now and it hurts like it did when I was 12
