"like a puzzle in my head that i find hard to solve"Craig.... excellent ananlysis of why we long ponder and not because we have a morbid facination!.Can i just reassure Adam that after years of campaign the holocaust is taught as a subject away from WW2 and now has its own place in the national cirriculum for years to come.Ps cant speak for Hull schools but all east riding schools have a holocaust memerorial day.

My grandfather is Jewish and I believe his father came from Poland so I take an interest in this sad part of history myself. I was at the Imperial War Museum the other year whilst they had a display of art created by concentration camp survivors and it was something I won't forget in a hurry, it made Hollywood films like Schindlers List look like nice fairytales,we should count ourselves lucky to live in such a free society and not one controlled by extremists of any persuasion.

hi adam, long time no speak.
i am glad you made the trip to see the sadistic attrocities that a group of people carried out against an innocent race. i hope it has put your life into perspective.
i am very interested in the two world wars but have a very special intrest in the second world war due to the horrific acts carried out against the Jewish people, ( and also the gypsies of Europe, under Natzi occupation). The barbaric acts carried out in concentration camps have never been equaled, though many have tried over the years.
The visit you made will stay with you for the rest of your life, but i know from our contact here and by E-Mail that you will be a better person for it , and i hope it was not too traumatic for you and the people that you went with.

    Best regards

I don't know if anyone else has been, but 'The Holocaust Centre' http://holocaustcentre.net/ in Laxton near Doncaster is a worthwhile visit. It's not a huge place, but it's very well done including a small theatre showing films of victims first hand accounts. It probably takes about 2hours to see everything, but there are some very touching details like the small plaques under each dedicated plant and tree outside telling the story of an individual victim.
PS. Don't go on a Saturday (Jewish day of rest) because it will be closed.

I have to say having been to the places I wasn't prepared for the emotional weight of the stories we got from our guide over the 5 days, its quite a lot to take in and just some of the stories I was left feeling cold inside as well as outside. Today on a group trip with my Ulpan Course we went to Yad Vashem which is the Holocaust Museum in Israel and even though I've been a few times before some of it still gets to me as I've now been to the places our guide mentioned. As I was saying to someone in our group earlier that the proudest moment for me when I went to Poland was walking into Birkenhau carrying the Israeli flag, can't think of a bigger thing to do than that.

Its been so long since I went to school, can't remember if we were taught about the Holocaust, I certainly remember being told about the World Wars but not sure if we did anything about the Holocaust. If anyone went to Wolfreton School back in the late 80's, early 90's maybe they can remember.

And Sagegee, i think I came back a better person, possibly you'd have to ask the people who really knew me at the point, I can't help but feel seeing Auschwitz and all of that would change anyone just for what it is. Its good that its there and its important the people go because if we don't learn from the past we're going to repeat the mistakes we've made and maybe the next time we won't come back.
