"With lads like Glen and Martin there is plenty of competition in the squad. That's always good to have. It means if you do get in the team you have to take the chance. Martin is only a few years older than me. He came in last season and did brilliantly. He showed exactly how to grab an opportunity."
Fair play to the lad. I won't let one bad performance change my opinion of him - he was fantastic when called upon last season and in extremely tough conditions i.e. team was underperforming, playing poor football. He just needs to keep it simple as he did last season. Kelly should be starting ahead of him, no doubt.
I think he's got tremendous promise, but he does need some more experience. He's only young yet, and I think he'll benefit immensely from a year on loan at a Championship club. He's very good defensively, but as we saw the other day he's good at attacking too and is not afraid to feed a cross into the box. Hopefully, given a few more years experience he'll be the complete package for us.
A season in the reserves and in the youth champs league for flanno is perfect.Hes done great for us so far apart from the 2nd half v Sunderland, when I think the early error for the goal just got to him for the rest of the half.Luckily the quality youngsters should get a few more games this year, as the amount of games in the reserve league is a disgrace Kelly or Johnson for Arsenal , luckily we arnt in the situation like we were with Insua a couple of years ago , were we HAD to play him
Ze Liverbird. Going on loan? As we all know the only players that get sent out on loan are generally the ones that are in ''limbo''. Okay Jay Spearing and Martin Kelly went out on loan however when they came back and got their place in the side, they excelled. But the majority of players that go out on loan,never come back. I don't think he will go on loan.
Flanagan is not good enough for Liverpool Fc at this moment in time. People say he played excellent last season but they should look back at the games and can see attacking players quite often get passed him, and then makes a clumsy challenge. He conceded a penalty, and his defending on crosses has always been limited. I bet that flanagan never becomes a first team regular, but believe that Jack Robinson will.

Steve McManaman Judas Robbie Fowler Steven Gerrard go out on loan.John Flanagan is up with the best of them, he lacks experience and the only way he can get experience is by staying. None of the others were the finished article when they first appeared.
Jordan Henderson went on loan to Coventry before cementing a place in Sunderland's side. Stewart Downing went on loan to Sunderland before cementing during a 9 year spell at Middlesborough. Jay Spearing to Leicester... Kelly to Huddersfield... Gulacsi to Hereford, Tranmere and Hull... Martin Hansen to Bradford... Players can go for experience, or because the club want them shifted, but the fact is they get first team football and it benefits all parties involved. Flanagan needs first team opportunities, which he would get on loan.
Agree with Ze Liverbird here. A season playing regularly in the Championship would only help his development in my opinion. We have cover in the right-back position and I would happy to see him go out on loan to gain first-team experience.
Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and David Beckham all went on loan when they were young, it didn't affect them much. So don't think it's a sign of not wanting a player if you send them out on loan.
It depends on the manager what "going on loan" means. With Rafa it was the kiss of death. It's what he did to players he didn't really want to keep but was waiting for their value to increase before selling them. I don't think that is necessarily going to be true for Dalglish. Both good managers- but both very different in philosophy too. Flanny made a lot of mistakes this past weekend- two could have been goals, one was. Sure, he's young, we can't be too harsh on him- doesn't mean he won't develop- but he's not ready to be in the first team starting line up- not for a team with aspirations of a top-4 finish. I think Flanny could do a job from the bench- but he should not be starting... a loan deal would however benefit him and us.
The lad is right, he will only improve by playing more and more. Kind of pointless in lower leagues i think. King Kenny will look after him and we need more local lads to push into the first team. To be fair he's trying to get into a position which is up for grabs by a senior england international and a former u21 international too.
At the moment I'd like him to stay due to Kelly and Johnsons injury issues but I think a years experience in "lower leagues" can actually be of massive benefit to a lad like Flanagan although I think this kids got real potential so if loaned he could do a job now for a lower end prem club or good championship team. We kept a decent number of clean sheets with him in the team back end of last season and yeah he wasn't great on Saturday but i've seen Johnson have far worse games than that and he is worth millions (allegedly). Kelly looks a great player and defo more developed than Flanagan but it can only be a good thing that we have young kids chomping at the bit to play who you know are going to work damn hard at their game and not sit around moaning if they don't play
Stewart Downing has been on loan to sunderland at some point..but I know what you mean.Its sort of a poison chalice for some but I think a lot of younger playeres can benefit..Jack Wilshere for one,so it's not always the kiss of death.
I was always more impressed with Robinson. Fair enough they play opposite sides and I'm hopeful for both long term, but I don't understand why Jack didn't get more praise than Flanagan for last season. And Kelly is the pick of the lot from the kids.
I think he is young enough to go and prove you wrong. Players sometimes develop and get better with age so a bit early to write him off.
