The standard of artificial pitches has moved on in leaps and bounds since the few we had previously in this country. I went to Oldham in 87/88 ish and the home advantage was unbelievable. Their players hung back instead of challenging for headers and they knew the pace and bounce of the pitch whereas our lot were made to look like idiots. It's a no-brainer for me. Will save lots of money for clubs in the long run.
Surely it's the uneveness of the pitch and the lumps and bumps that make football a spectacle. I don't like anything that is artificial to be honest because it is all too perfect. When it's wet the ball sticks or doesn't bounce the same and it mixes up the game a bit. If it was all perfect and the ball did everything it was supposed to everytime then where is the leveller in that. No doubt it will happen again if the PL want it and other clubs in the lower reaches will follow suit as and when they have the money. Football was meant to be played on grass in the winter.
Would you like a few lumps and bumps in a snooker table sensible.......I thought one of the biggest moans teams make was regarding the state of the pitch, stopping good football being played on it.
Not the same game plymborn so no to football pitches like snooker tables thanks. The state of a ground or pitch can sometimes be a great leveller in my opinion so long may the **** ones reign. Professional footballers don't like good old fashioned challenges anymore either and I think the primma donna's would like everything to be asthetic and nice. Give me a good old fashioned blood and guts game on a bumpy pitch anytime.
I always think that the best tennis grand slam is Wimbledon for the same reason you give sensible, it's a natural surface - warts and all. Surely lawn tennis evolved on grass (hence the name) and is therefore ment to be played on a natural surface. Some of the surfaces you see these players sliding around on - it just seems wrong to me.
Not that I'm into tennis particularly but it has to be the same in any sport. If everything bounces the same height everytime and never deviates from a projected course then where is the skill in spotting that. I used to play table tennis in a helicopter hanger on a ship at sea and believe me if you can play there you can play anywhere when the ship is bobbing about all over the place. Great fun and it doesn't half teach you to watch the ball.
It's quite ironic in a way but did anyone watch the Stevenedge v Spurs match today? Now if ever there was an advert for a non snooker table pitch being a leveller then there is was for all to see. I rest my case M'Lord.
Before Argyles new pitch......which wasn't that hot.......we managed to still lose regularly, didnt level anything up.
