I played it for two hours (didn't get out of making Fajitas) and already hooked.

Not ventured very far yet obviously but all good fun so far.

You find you get overwhelmed very quickly. I left the dog in the settlement as he was getting in the way/killed and took Codsworth with me who actually handles himself pretty well especially when I was being mass swarmed by ghouls in a parking garage. I might send him back to base actually because him getting me out of sticky situations isn't the way it should be early ingame.

VATS takes a little bit of getting use. It seems a little weird at first, I just can't put my finger on it. I'm also constantly getting RAD sickness, far more than I did in my early plays of Fallout 3. Battles can seem real desperate. The fight with the deathclaw while you are in Power Armor was amazing. Seeing the thing come at you with the tunnel vision is ****ing terrifying.

Air traffic? In what regard mate? Excuse me for my ******ery if it is more than obvious.

Well that's spoiled the next 6 hours for me then <laugh>

I've just met the dog, spent far too long at the beginning looking for bobby pins to raid the safes. He seems fairly annoying, never really helped me kill the mole rats, sort of just stood there, being a dumb ****.

He best up his game or he's getting put in a bag and thrown off a bridge.

Yeah he nearly died with the molerats, and the deathclaw, and raiders. Get the robot with you, he is far more effective. The only good thing the dog does is bark when he discovers something which normally leads to some goodies which is appreciated.

I'm going to stop mentioning situations that will resemble spoilers here mate as I tend to get ahead of myself! I think when I play this afternoon I'll build up the defenses of my settlement. I enjoyed winding up the oriental dude about his dead kid yesterday. He said it wasn't his fault and I told him you were his dad and should have protected him. He didn't like it at first but understood later on. I may kill him at somepoint and his miserable ****y wife.

I'll bear that in mind, the robot's a pain in the arse, I'm not sure I wanna hang around with him too much.

There's more air traffic in this one apparently. Basically more going on in the sky. Might creep in the more you play. There's a rocket pack you can wear too I've heard so may be able to fly yourself at some point.

Must confess I'm not hugely sold on it. That so early on there is an emphasis on settlements is far too intrusive on the experience. It's like...

    "hi, I'm new"
"Great, will you be our leader and rebuild the world?"
"Err do I have a choice?"
"Well, you could wander off aimlessly and die if you would prefer?"
    "I'm your man"

Gameplay is also far too demanding too quickly. It's very easy to wander into a mass group of ghouls with no chance of survival. One of the earliest quests is ludicrously demanding in terms of distance, and your armour choices are basically massive power armour (no stealth) or a dusty overcoat (no life). Cores, ammo and decent weaponry is scarce so maybe I'm getting it wrong?!

Graphically it is sensational, but I'm not convinced it's "better" than FO3. Face creation is laborious, levelling is not as obvious either IMO, when it should really feel like you follow a path previously now you just seem to pick whatever you want, whenever you can.

Final gripe to await more comment, but a minigun in my opinion should decimate people.....it doesn't.....

I was disappointed with the minigun, I must have emptied a good 700 rounds into a deathclaw before he flopped to the ground. In reality, something made of meat and bone would be shredded by a minigun, it should be a luxury weapon that expires and is unusable after that, so you can't just blitz everything in sight, but it's not.. you keep it and it's ****.

The settlement thing done my head in a bit as well, building beds ffs, I treated it as sort of a tutorial on how to work the interface and ****ed around with building different things but then it just felt like I was in a simulator. Boring.

I minced a few beasts in the waste land and ****ed a farmer's **** up, went to town on his two headed bull... that was the most fun I had last night.

Boring is right. I've woken up post nuclear war, everything is fcked and I'm expected to give a toss about some random weirdos, then build their beds?!? Really, how am I better equipped than the fcking mechanic who is doing nothing?!? Settlements should have been an option much, much later in the game and even then dependent on your alignment. A loner should not be looked on as a leader and once more there appears little point in being evil.

I'm thinking of starting again and trying to be different. Total stealth, feck the minute men, try and play it properly. In reality more or less anyone would **** their pants and not want to step into power armour within an hour of waking up.

The reason you had to get in the armour in the first place was farcical. We can't open the security gate, we've been waiting for somebody like you who we know nothing about to come along with a hair pin and open the gate so you can get in the battery... just kick the ****ing gate in pal, it's wire mesh fencing anyhow.

Then you kill a handful of people that you could have killed with a standard gun and then an unnecessary Deathclaw... just so you can justify the suit.

Just don't bother with the suit, or the deathclaw... beat up a few bad guys, tell the chink he's a failure and move on.

Haha, I opened it before meeting those dopes anyway. A true sandbox would have had the idiots inside saying "we're stuck, please help" and if you happen to go with the power armour, fine, but you should equally be able to sneak off and kill the gunmen. Or kill them.

The death claw was an excuse to shows off graphics rather than the armour!!! If it appears, you should be able to either fight it or run for cover. I think you've hit the issue - it's open world, but the directives are far, far too specific. If you've got to the police station, you'll know that yet again your only option is power armour. Poor execution given its four years in the making.

I'm only hoping it gets to whole new levels of carnage later on in the game, that make this seem necessary. If it carries on like this, I'll be fairly disappointed, although I'm probably not as disappointed as you as I never really played FO3 so don't compare the two. I have the free DL code for FO3 so I'll be going with that next.

So far, I like it but like on Skyrim, I won't love it until I can wander off and do my own thing without being ushered by the storyline.

There's more carnage but it tends to be you as the main event. Imagine The Walking Dead but instead of zombies who can be killed, there's ten times the number, they drop from high buildings without suffering damage and take dozens of rounds to drop. VATS suffers greatly from lag and so isn't hugely usable when there's half a dozen ghouls on your face. It's not really enjoyable, nor is it a compelling challenge. It just feels off.
