The manager said he will be going out on loan next season, he does need first team football but i would keep him here incase if Patrice Evra gets injured.

There's a strong possibility that Fábio will go to Benfica", Fábio's agent Cassiano Pereira tells Portuguese sports daily O Jogo.

Talk of a surprise loan move for Fabio Da Silva to Benfica emerged from the manager last week and after confirmation from his agent, the player himself has commented.

“I am excited about the opportunity to play for Benfica – a very famous and big club,” Fabio told A Bola. “I feel very honoured by Benfica’s interest, but my transfer now depends on negotiations with Manchester United.”

With Patrice Evra’s form being generally below par since the World Cup it seems very strange that the club are open to loaning Fabio out next season. It’s disappointing too. However, there are rumours that the deal has been put in place as a part exchange for Benfica star Nicolas Gaitán.

I don't think Evra's form since the world cup has been below par, he's had his ups and downs just like every other player in out squad has had in that time frame.

The loan should only do Fabio good, he's not good enough to replace Evra in big matches and he's hitting that age where he should be looking to break out of the reserve team and play more first team football. Maybe his injuries haev set him back in this regard, but either way he isn't where he should be right now. Getting him regular game time at a big club like Benfica who are weak in that position is a good move. It will either make him as a good left wing back or it will show he's not good enough to make the step up. Either way, it's good for United and good for Fabio because if he makes it he'll play more for us and if he doesn't he'll ultimately be moved to a club where he will get games.

It's rumored that the loan deal plus the possible transfer of Macheda could be part of a deal to bring Gaitan to United. I personally think the loan could be good for Fabio, it may help him find his best position if he has a chance to play more regularly because I am still not convinced he'll end up as a full time left back, I'd rather see someone like Cisshoko (first choice would be Coentrao but it's unlikely he will be leaving Real in the near future) brought in as a long term replacement for Evra.

Alba doesn't even play left back for his current club, he plays on the wing.
