All we need is a linesman with similar (one sided) vision to the man at Stamford Bridge today and we have a great chance. :)

As for that scouse muppet who continually denegrates himself here, well, hate is the closest emotion to love. And his obsession suggests that he has more than a little love for Man United.

How ironic you should say that when:

SAF did it with Aberdeen and Man United, and has won 4 European trophies against Jose's 3. So the argument that Mourinho is slightly better on that basis could only be made by someone who is so blinded that they don't wish to see <ok>

Aberdeen <laugh> I was talking of the main competition and you know I was but wheeled out the mantra when losing a discussion <ok> Aberdeen was an inherited team who under McNeil had a better win ratio then Fergie ever achieved and they only won a minor Euro trinket in a bad year. So blinded You can't see beyond the United doors. I think I'll call you Stevie Wonderless.

I think that's what we have been saying <doh> Fergie's up there but there are others whose European records are better as mentioned Paisley, Maureen, Clough, Ancelotti etc The thread said European Master? really should have said Fergie one of Europe's masters and when this was politely pointed out the arsehole brigade saw it as a act of war as they so often do. But what can we expect from the tosser that wrote it <laugh>

Lol, I love how you keep referring to this "mantra" when you clearly have no idea what the word means <laugh> Your usage appears to be "I've been shown up again, so let's try and change my argument and claim I was right"...

And remind me again, how can Aberdeen's only ever European trophy class as a "minor trinket"?

    I agree with Ginger Marks.
Ferguson is up there, but not having done in 25 years what Bob Paisley aka ''The Genius in the flat cap'' did in 9 years proves he's a long way off.
I don't care how much Ferguson wins,He still can't match Bob Paisleys 13 major honours in just 9 seasons.

SAF has won 14 major honours in eleven seasons, from 1998-2009. And over that time he had to compete with Wenger's Invincibles, Real Madrid's Galacticos and Mourinho's Millionaires, and so arguably faced much stiffer competition that Paisley, who only really had to deal with a massively overachieving Nottingham Forest as a long term rival during his time at 'pool.

That said, I don't fully agree with the original thread. SAF has shown an ability to compete with the best in Europe, and do as well as most managers, but still doesn't qualify as a European Master. He'd need at least one more CL to match up to legends like Paisley, Clough, Saachi, Happel and Michels. To my mind you need to either win three CLs, win two in quick succession, or win one with a very unfancied team like Feyenoord. I'd argue the same about Mourinho - he still needs to win another EC to be a true master, as Porto and Inter both had good European pedigree before he joined them.

To my mind, what makes SAF a great manager is not his performance in any one area, but that he can handle all the major areas of management. Like you said before KPR, Paisley couldn't have built Liverpool from the ground up like Shankly did, and Shankly couldn't have achieved the same success in a short period of time that Paisley did. SAF isn't a master of player development and training like Wenger, tactics and motivation like Mourinho, nor a master of Europe like Paisley. But he has shown he can be compared to all of those managers in their respective areas, and has proved himself far superior to them in others.

There it is again. What's a "knee-jerk mantra" Ginge? If you're going to make up an expression, you should at least make up a meaning for it! <laugh>

And I could have sworn this thread was about Sir Alex Ferguson...hence why everyone was so confused when you felt the need to bring Maureen into the discussion...

No this thread is not about Bacon Face and he is far from being the European master as that's why we contested the ambitious claim. I think we did a good job, don't you?

Dang, there was me thinking you can't stay on topic, when the problem is actually that you don't understand what the topic is! <laugh>

And you still haven't explained what a knee-jerk mantra is...is it a form of Buddhist kung fu?

Swarbs, name the other areas that Ferguson is superior to the managerial greats.
I personally can't think of any. Before you mention his success at Aberdeen.Aberdeen when Ferguson was manager were the 3rd team in Scotland and thats comparable to what Rafa Benitez did in Spain with Valencia.Ferguson butted heads with the old firm and won,Rafa butted heads with Real Madrid and Barcelona and won.Rafa won Valencia's first title in 31 years.Ferguson won Aberdeens first title in a similar period.
In the way Bob Paisley would never have been able to build an empire,I don't think Ferguson would have been able to carry one on and succeed a messiah like Busby.Building an empire is hard, but in my opinion carrying on one having succeeded a messiah is just as hard.As I said before Bob Paisley succeeded a messiah,Ferguson succeeded a moron.
