It's being reported on Sky that an elite group of clubs led by our top 4 are considering the possibility of forming a breakaway European Super League. This idea has been raised in the past and it may well be that it will die a death this time around. However I believe that in the not too distant future it will become a reality. What effect do you think this would have on the Premier League in general and the Swans in particular? I personally think it would be a good thing for 2 reasons. Firstly it would make the League more competitive and secondly the reduced revenue (Sky would undoubtedly jump on the European League bandwagon) would force teams to live within their means.
Wouldn't the English get the 'hump' again. Another EPL (European Premier League) for other than English clubs. If you did put the top 4 teams of the current EPL into the new EPL/ESP how many English players do you think would be playing in the new league? Now, not to sound as if we don't like the English (!!), read it as British if you like. It would not increase the British players in the European teams, so I reckon there could be 8 British born players in the new league - if it ever took off.
From a personal point of view I would be happy to let them bugger off and get on with it. Maybe then we would be left with a competitive top division. Remember when the likes of Aston Villa, Ipswich, even Norwich & Swansea could make the top 3-5? Oh those were the days. The TV money flooding in for the PL and more so the Champions League is killing our game IMO
It's never going to happen as the premier league, the clubs in it, Sky TV, the FA, UEFA and all the other FAs and leagues would have to agree, when have all these ever agreed to anything ? The clubs left would therefore have a dramatic cut in their incomes, the fans would never be able to afford to do away games, and the only place to seem them is on tv , this subject is brought up every few years and is rejected! Now a proper British league would have merit IMO
What they were saying was that there was talk of a breakaway league. Just how that would work I don't know.
Will not ever work. You see how leagues work is that of the 20 teams or so involved only 4 or 5 can ever be successful at once. The rest will simply get more and more marginalised. How long do you think that the likes of Juve, Valencia, Ajax and Arsenal will maintain their crowds and incomes if they are regularly in the lower half of any league? Would United, Chelsea, Milan, Inter, Bayern, Madrid and Barca be willing to cast into a league where 6th or 7th might be the best they can achieve? The answer is no. The Champions League works as it is because it is not a direct comparison (most top teams don't meet until KO stages which can always go either way) and because it still allows for all the top teams to be dominant at home. A proper league would be direct comparisons and would mean no easy ties against Wolves, Ascoli, Valladolid etc.
The plot thickens:-http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/28072011/58/champions-league-clubs-plan-breakaway-league.html
it will happen one day, the bigger clubs are getting bigger every season,... the problem is with a super league with all the top teams in Europe all the big money will move with them.....It will happen one day and that day wont be all that far away the way football is going...
Bring it on 99 , it will be a great day for all other teams to be rid of the top few teams of every European country !!!
im not sure about it myself until i read the In's and outs on where it leaves the rest of us in Europe, It is going to happen though its on the cards and when the final details are worked out it will happen.....when... well its anybodies guess...
The " Super League " will take most of the world's " Plastic fans " with them & leaves the rest of the teams & their fans to begin anew ..
the majority of fans are plastic, only a relitively small pesentage actually go to football matches....that dont make them any less of a fan to be honest..
If the big teams left the league, then the Swans wouldn't get to play teams like Man U and Chelsea and even though they would finish higher up the league, I think some fans would lose interest. Also, the money we receive from TV rights would be cut drastically. But if it went ahead there would be lots of argument about which 4 teams from England were chosen (assuming they got 4 places). And once in the Euro league, would there be any promotion and relegation? It's a quite complicated thing to make happen and involves the agreement of lots of people. But this is a money thing, so if the top teams decide they want to go then they will. There is nothing that can stop them. They can set up their own association and others (TV companies, etc.) would be certain to follow.
You have an overly-simplistic view of fans. If you think that there are only two types of fans (plastic and non-plastic) then you are incredibly naive.
And now that the Swans have more money than most Championship, League One and League Two teams, then the Swans should also be banished so that 'real' teams can get on with playing 'real' football. That is what you are saying. You don't like teams with more money and success, so get rid of them. Well we now also have more money and more success than most clubs in the football league. There will also be teams with more money. What do you want? A footaball league with one team playing against itself because the teams with more money got banished. LOL. So, so naive.
who would be the 18 or 20 sides in the so called super league? Man Utd, Chelsea, Barca, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter struggling to find 12-14 more Super teams, do we add ac Milan, russian sides, how many teams per country, promotion, relegations, be a nightmare
The big loser from this of course will be the fans, for example you play ac milan away on Saturday then next week you are away to real madrid, then two games at home and you could have bayern Munich and psg , how can fans afford not only the tickets for games but flights and hotels every other week for a season ? If you really want alienate your support by all means set this up, they will lose the plastic fans hands over fist, the champions/europa league at least offers an adventure each season for team's who qualify, this so called league will kill these competitions. And the tv rights will be gone from the pyramid system, by these teams breaking away it will mean the death of football in the country, the only teams left will be the ones in this league, all the rest will either go to the wall, or become like league 2 teams with no money and no hope of ever achieving anything! If it happened I for one will cancel all my sky products and go freeview as it's pointless having something I don't need, I bet I wouldn't be alone!
My version of a plastic fan is a fan who lives in a small team community or lives abroad but only supports a top 4 club , if that's over simplistic , so be it .
Also , once the teams that move on to the " Super League " , some sort of financial restrictions should be placed on the remaining teams . Any team wanting to come back to the " Premier " from the super league , for whatever reason , must agree to the restrictions or keep moving on . just an opinion
