Samuel Eto'o has turned down an offer from West Ham and is now being lined up for a shock switch to Sunderland, talkSPORT understands. The Cameroon striker, who took part in his fourth World Cup in Brazil this summer, is available on a free transfer following his release from Chelsea. The 33-year-old's agent, Claudio Vigorelli, had been in talks with the West Ham hierarchy about a one-year deal with an option on a further year. However, contrary to recent reports, talkSPORT have been told by sources in Italy the offer made to the ex-Barcelona star fell short of expectations. Eto'o, who hit nine goals in 21 appearances for Chelsea last term, wants to remain in the Premier League and has already declined lucrative offers from Middle East clubs and Turkish giants Besiktas. The four-time African Player of the Year is prepared to take a big pay cut to stay in England despite claims of excessive wage demands. Sam Allardyce said at the weekend he had not given up on a deal for the veteran hitman, but Gus Poyet is now ready to step in and offer Eto'o a contract. The Black Cats boss is keen to add experience to his strikeforce and is hoping to convince Eto'o to move to the north east.
could not see this ever he would want astronomical wages which i for one could not see Ellis forking out for especially for a 33 year old good player but also has a diving streak and is very greedy no thanks
Cannot see this happening. Even if he does drop his wage demands it will still be silly money he's after. More importantly, he is past is.
He'll go to the MLS or some obscure Middle Eastern team that will pay bucket loads. Why would he turn down West Ham but not turn us down?
Footballing philosophy? Last I looked he was a player who liked to play with the ball on the deck, we're a much better fit.
Out of the blue this one to be fair, he's gonna get goals but seems one of those types who would think he's way bigger than your club and would maybe do more harm than good in behind the scenes. Aside from the wages and potential ticking time bomb, the guy's class when he's on form, and when panic buttons are being hit towards the end of the window he'll get shed loads of offers from teams wanting a goal scorer.
He also said he would never play for Mourinho. At his age I doubt he'd really care for philosophy. I'd just be looking for an easy ride with plenty of dosh.
He would raise the profile of the club instantly, the commercial revenue would help with the outlay and he scores goals, even if its for one season, I see nothing but pluses.
Talk about step up, omg can't believe we even being considered, even at 33 class act. Won't happen but wow
