See, the problem is, White is good at defending when he comes back, he just never comes back. Conolly comes back, and is **** at it.

Some terrific comments in this interesting thread about"optimism". We all seem to want the same thing but differ on the means to the end. Every year lots of fans, from lots of clubs, start with the same feeling for a new start and success on the field.

I am no different and look back at years when we were a force in the top league. That was many years ago and at a cost of reaching for the stars making the club bankrupt. Lots of other clubs are in the same boat now and will go down the tube eventually. Football today is one big ego trip for some very rich foreign owners. The rest of the 36 or so other teams in the top 2 leagues just have to dream of one day someone coming along with lots of ego and ambition to succeed.

We at Leeds are caught up with a lot of other very well supported teams who are being used as a cash cow for some dubious characters who carefully milk the club of any profits they can get their hands on. Premier football is the ultimate dream for these characters because of the Sky connection and the even bigger rewards.

Bates fits the bill and has done well out of football, both at Chelsea and Leeds. We will never know the assests accumulated by certain characters in the game (Rangers FC springs to mind) One thing remains constant throughout and that is the optimism of the fans.

So, as it stands, I am hopeful for the coming season. I have read the comments above and see the points for most being correct in their opinion of the current state of things at Leeds. I think Bates has a BIG EGO and think that he will want to prove the point of being financially viable and reaching the Premier League. I cant see it happening without backing a proven manager with enough cash to achieve this over the coming season.

Next season there will be 12 or more clubs with the same passionate fans all dreaming of the same thing. Can we do it ? I'm optomistic <whistle>

I have hope for any match, but I am devoid of optimism that we will be anything other than making up the numbers. Strange things can happen in football, but the one factual certainty (and it is a fact, if anyone wants to look at the details on the official site since 2000-01 ) is that LUFC are terrible after Christmas through to April. Check out The Square Ball for further proof that this phenomenon has gone on for many historic seasons

I predicted 10th for our first season back - we were 7th - and predicted 10th again for this season - we were 14th - so I may get it bang on with 10th again for the coming season.

bates wants Premier League, but he wants it on the cheap. It's a massive financial benefit, but he's not willing to risk a sure thing to try and get it.

So you've got the inside track on the player budget then, have you. Another thought presented as fact. <doh>

WJ - Am starting to wonder whether you are just hanging around waiting for Marko to make a contribution so you can make some derisory response and finish it with a <doh>

    Maybe take a break?

Fist time I've used <doh>, actually Elmo. On this occasion, it was warranted. He has a similar trait to yourself - presenting thoughts as fact. But woe betide anyone who does exactly the same & doesn't conform to your thoughts/facts! In actual fact, an apt word to describe this trait is propoganda. Funny that, it's a word I've often seen associated on here with Bates, justifiably I might add. But it's not ok for him to do it, but it's k for you.

I don't need a break. I'm the blind optimist, remember? Perhaps the two of you should take a break. Perhaps take in a few funerals to cheer yourselves up?

Because a similar transfer budget to the last two seasons (if you think it'll be more, you're delusional) is definitely something to shout home about and definitely "taking a risk" on getting to the Premier League. Doesn't stink of "cautious, on the cheap" just like last season and the season before...

Seriously. The budget hasn't gone up. We're just expecting Warnock to use it better. It's still "lets get to the Premier League, but spend as little as possible". The budget will be less than last season as we're "cutting costs". Doesn't inspire much confidence.

We agree Bates needs to invest more but look at it another way, he IS NOT going to so did we really need Paynter, Forssell, Mika, Sam, Bruce, Parker all things considered regarding appearances and likelihood to feature much? Add to that list O'Dea and we have 7 wages saved. No idea what they were on so I am going to pitch it at £7k a week. Around 2.5million saved on players who are not good enough, replace those 7 with 3 decent signings in the Pearce mould and spend 1.5 million add to that their wages of between 7 and 8k a week and it will be money well spent.

who would we have had without those? Consider... 3 of them were brought in as a desperation move

Any three of better quality? How many games did Paynter, Forssell, Mika, Sam, Bruce and Parker play for us this season? When talking of this season also consider those I left out: Nunez, AOB, Bromby and Rachbuka

Completely agree with this & I am looking forward to the new players joining...
But I imagine we will still have a few of these money pits on the books next year (hopefully the reality check will focus them on rebuilding their reputation).

I personally expect the difference between 1st & 15th next season will be very close.

I completely agree with that aswell. Isn't hindsight fantastic?

It's what I said earlier and it iswhat Grayson said at the time. But he had to go. I hope warnock is More successful at moving people on.
