Made the Daily Mail wow. Cant they get anything right http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3214825/Junction-42-sets-traffic-lights.html If you ever have to pass through this junction, ensure you have left plenty of time to get to your destination. Because chances are you will get caught behind one of the 42 sets of traffic lights – and then another and another... Unsurprisingly locals are in despair at the new Grovehill junction in Beverley, East Yorkshire, which they say is causing chaos for drivers. The junction, which used to be a five-route roundabout, is part of the £22million Beverley Integrated Transport Plan, which includes a newly built southern bypass. please log in to view this image +2 The new Grovehill junction in Beverley, East Yorkshire, has 42 sets of traffic lights (pictured) and locals say it is confusing for drivers Howard Tomlinson, of the Grovehill Action Group, is worried that the number of traffic lights at the junction is confusing motorists. He said: ‘The main concern is the layout and complexity of the junction – it’s like something you would see coming off a motorway. It’s like Spaghetti Junction. There are about ten sets of lights all close together and it requires drivers to be very alert and observant to use the lights properly. Drivers are stopping at red lights immediately in front of them but when they see lights go to green beyond those red lights, some drivers are setting off. ‘If someone walks across when drivers are going through red lights they run the risk of getting knocked down. We are also concerned about the risk of collisions. please log in to view this image +2 Howard Tomlinson from the Grovehill Action Group (pictured) is worried that the number of traffic lights at the junction is confusing motorists ‘[The council] said it would take some months for it to bed in, but they don’t appear to be observing what is happening.’ However, a council spokesman contradicted Mr Tomlinson. He said: ‘We are continuing to monitor the Grovehill junction and collating all the constructive feedback from users. We are looking at the issue of “see through”, where a driver accidentally watches a set of traffic lights in the distance, rather than the set in front of them. ‘A common way of dealing with this is to fit angled shields to the lights and we are looking to see if this is feasible.’ The council will also be adjusting the timing of the lights to cope with traffic flows, following the opening of the bypass, known as Minster Way. The spokesman added: ‘We will soon be carrying out a road safety audit, which involves a representative from the police visiting the junction to see it working, to identify any issues. This is all standard practice, not something special for this junction.’
Why does this happen? The more a junction gets developed the more confusing it gets. These roundabouts covered in lights are ridiculous. How can it be an improvement on a normal roundabout? I quite like how East Yorkshire seems to have less of these daft junctions than elsewhere.
Replacing perfectly good, naturally traffic flow regulating, roundabouts with bank after bank of poorly timed traffic lights is happening all across the country and is a pain in the arse for drivers. So long as you include light controlled pedestrian crossings, councils can access specific European Union funding programmes which is, I suspect, a major reason for building these unnecessary and irritating traffic flow systems in the first place. Also it probably upsets the young lady who lives in my Sat-Nav as she doesn't know that any of them are there.
I use the junction weekly, and it's really not that bad. First time I used it i got a bit confused but after that it's quite straightforward.
I went through there a few weeks ago and, as a noob, it's a pain because you suddenly realise you're in the wrong lane and you slow the traffic up.
And if you think that one of the five feeder roads doesn't have traffic light controls, it could be even worse!
Agree completely. Regular users actually rate it but if anyone trundles up to it confused then it's not good enough. In my opinion, the only reason it's a problem is because they engineered so many separate pedestrian crossings into the junction. They've done exactly the same at Mount Pleasant, Princes Ave/SBW and the "improvements" at Ferensway/SB/Bev Rd. Completely unnecessary. On one of the roads (in Beverley), the pedestrian would have to cross over three islands, meaning four press and wait buttons to press. What pedestrian wants to do that? They'll just go twenty yards up the road and jaywalk. Reading the article, EU funding for the scheme necessitated this. Unbelievable. This also makes drivers wait unnecessarily as they can't turn left on a give way - they have to wait for the new red light to turn green. Even more worrying though is that traffic planners and evaluators don't see any problems with it, despite overwhelming opinion of the people who use it. And they get quite arsey when anyone dare tell them. I don't believe there is anyone who has used this junction who can honestly say they weren't confused the first time they used it. That's why it's simply not acceptable.
What pisses me off are those two pedestrian junctions on Freetown Way. You wait at either side of the road where the space accomodates 7/8 people side by side. Then you get to the middle where the space is 2/3 people. So there's a massive dance off to get to the other side!
It is probably the same planners that designed the junction of A164 and A1079 where the main flow of traffic (along the A164) is controlled by a filter light and the main lights control the filter lane, fine when you are used to it but really confusing if you are not. On the subject of confusing junctions, we used to live near Hemel Hempstead where there is a large roundabout with 2 way traffic and around it are numerous mini roundabouts controlled by lights unsurprisingly it is dubbed the magic roundabout by locals.
This story's made it in Bild, it must be a very slow news day in Germany... http://www.bild.de/news/ausland/ver...ng-ist-ein-rotlichtviertel-42374616.bild.html
The new traffic lights at Sainsbury's in Hessle now cause match day traffic to back up off the carriageway exit and onto the A63, there'll be a serious accident caused by this one of these days. You have 3 sets of lights which just kills the traffic flow, I'd love to know which ****wit puts these plans forward and more to the point who approves them.
It's actually fine. The lanes could probably do with better signage, but it's a lot better that the old Grovehill roundabout that it replaced.
Agreed, the wife uses it every day & has no problems at all with it, but I guess the infrequent visitor may find it confusing
