There's only one option for England Captain - the colossus that is the Grolt. But then I don't really want that to happen, so we can have him to ourselves.

hmm, this thread is very strange!

    my twopenny worth is:

jonah is correct - giggs has NEVER been eligible to play for england and owen NEVER eligible for wales - its a myth that either could have played for a nation other than the one they represented. giggs played for england school boys because he went to school in england - no other reason. owen was also schooled in wales but has no possible way of playing for the welsh national side.

the england captain should be joe hart - playing really well, young, great leader, inspirational character, big future in the game, only going to get better, long term captain better than short term - in my opinion, its a no brainer <ok>

oh, and give harry the top job - at least he'll get the players excited about playing for their country again, get them playing more attacking football and just make the whole experience of playing for england more fun one suspects <ok>

    Robin Williams-Captain my Captain.
Failing that Michael Caine. He managed a draw against the Germans.

Happy with Parker going into the Euro's with Hart or Jones ultimately taking over - Jones is still a way off as nobody seems to know his best position and he is not yet guaranteed a starting berth in the team which is a pre-requisite for the captain. Call me old fashioned but I do think that your captain should be one of your best players so whilst Hart qualifies with this I don't think Jones does as yet.

Going slightly off thread I do think that this is an opportunity to have a bit of a clear-out of the players who failed so miserably in South Africa and frankly most of whom have not got any better. If Terry isn't captain I'd not take him as I am sure he will, once more, be a devisive member of the squad and his presence will undermine the incumbent captain, plus he is too slow to cut it at international level. Given his current relations with Anton I can't see him having a hugely successful partnership with Rio Ferdinand (assuming that RF is ever fully fit again).

I would hate to see the same old England team run out and fail. If we are to fail at least let us do so blooding a few youngsters so that maybe we will be able to do better in Rio.

.....he wouldn't be english, he would be naturalised british, which possibly could make him available for any of the home nations.

All depends what you want from your captain. For me its a leading example on the pitch and not known off it, unless for good reasons but with the ability to either give their mates a bollocking or gentle encouragement depending on what is required.
You used to get names like Butcher and Ince these days you get the likes of Terry (thug) and Beckham (can take decent free kicks but a motivational speech - really -he cant put to words together ffs)
Its the likes of Matt Holland and Grant Holt that I would really want as they inspire aswell as compete themselves unfortunately it seems like the moment you become big enough to play for the England team you become an automatic cock who is more likely to get front page news rather than back. Is there anybody 'established' in the England team who you think is a decent human? - The younger players seem to have a bit more levelheadedness but the old boys are thugs, morons or both.

Will the new manager pick his own man or just somebody who has done it before? If its the old method then you're right, no-one currently has the makings of a good captain either tactically, emotionally or morally. Is there anyone new out there who isn't established but could come in and play well and lead the team?

Redruth, I dont think there is really. It seems either the players automatically get greedy and consider lifestyle over playing or the papers build them up just to knock them down again. It seems that the new youngsters have got a bit more sense about them. Jones, Kelly @ Liverpool, Wilshere and AOC @ Arsenal seem level headed at the moment but the chances of the new manager starting over again around a bunch of 20 year olds seems unlikely.

Seems to me the captain should be

    Clean (no dodgy past)
    Inspirational
Have worked hard from the bottom up
Work their socks off every match they play
    Be hungry and passionate
NOT be on stupid money (care more about their club than country as club pay more)

Hmmm seems to me - Grant Holt

A captains role in football in unimportant, its just a ceremonial postion, unlike like say a cricket team. Would not matter a jot if the Dagenham Girl Pipers got up a football team, the captains role is insignificant. All commited teams play with eleven captains.

Agree "truth seeker".The biggest decision a captain makes is to call heads or tails, and decide which way to kick.:emoticon-0105-wink:

Every great team has a talisman. Surely the captaincy has some sort of relevance? Holty Leads from the front for city and you can see the boost he gives everyone. Look at Steven Gerrard when Liverpool won the champions league in 2005.

The armband may be meaningless, but what it represents is very important.

Bothroyd played for England not so long ago so its not entirely out of the question. A lot is made about age but look how many guys are still playing in their late 30's in the Prem. And how old is Ainsworth for goodness sake?
