With all the hand wringing that's been going on regarding us not making moves in the transfer market, it got me wondering, when did we last sign a major player in June?

I'm not sure I recall one in recent years. Windass might count, but he had been on loan in previous seasons

    Turner signed in July 2006

Garcia and Hughes both were in July in 2007.

Geovanni, Boateng and Mendy etc all came in July in 2008

Altidore was in August 2009, JVoH was definitely September. Olly - that had to be Late July.

The signing hysteria happens each year in June, but seriously, beyond Evans and Dudgeon (since they're this year) can anyone name a player we've signed before July in recent years?

The point some people seem to forget is that if you sign players early, you have to pay them early.

May sound obvious but with todays salaries as high as they are, 6 weeks salary times 6 or 7 players amounts to one heck of a lot of cash.

Look on it this way if we leave signing our players til later it will pay for a whole year's salary of another player. That's how much we are talking about.

Did any of us really class Turner, Mendy or Altidore as major signings, at the time?

It doesn't take much to work that out does it, I can't believe how many people don't even consider something so simple. Don't most contracts run till the end of June so most free transfers don't happen till after then either.

The only time i can remember us signing players in May/June was when we back in league 2 (division 3). Allsopp, Dawson, Hinds etc in June time, Ashbee, Green, Strong and Anderson the June before and a whole host of names the June before that. However, things have changed a lot since we were in league 2, and the situation is very much like Strovolos says. In our time higher up the leagues we've very rarely signed players in June time, as is the case with most of our rivals. Aside from Liverpool signing Henderson, there hasn't really being that much activity in the PL, and most of the Championship activity with the exception of West Ham and Ipswich has involved changing managers. I can see the floodgates opening transfer wise by the start of July, if we haven't made much progress by the end of next month, then i can understand people worrying but until then just sit tight and see what happens.

According to the ever reliable Wikipedia, Marney was signed by Parkinson on 14th July 2006.

Surely any Parky signing would have to be July - he wasn't appointed himself until 29th June.

Actually, that would be right, I don't know why I'd got it into my head that we signed him so early.

who cares about early signings anyway. as long as everyone (garcia and stewart excepted) is in place and fit by the 5th august who cares ? only the sados and folks with no life. if you care to look around not many clubs have signed anyone. take away thje players our rivals have lost to the PL who else has moved that would improve us.? Nolan and Chopra have passed there sell by date. Hull City have a squad now of 24 pros. who could start the season tomorrow.
Many other clubs are in disaray. Keep the faith and patience. Enjoy the summer and Wimbledon. Relax all.

Nolan's 29. Every team in the CC and most of the bottom half of the premiership would take him gladly. As a newbie you are not making a good impression calling regulars on here.

Maybe you were thinking that Marney May hit the target at some time?

    Who's he calling exactly?

Telling people to calm down seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Saying any team would take Nolan, well yes they would. But West Ham didn't "take" Nolan, they were the only championship club who could ever have got him. They've given him a contract which blows practically every other team's finances out of the water, and if they don't secure promotion, it could be a very very costly deal. They've not done well. They've simply done a contract which no other championship club could consider.

Try reading your own post mate. Saying "Nolan is past it" is not calling any of the regulars of this board. It's expressing an opinion, which is why we're all here.
