Prospects for the rest of the season looked bleak...did we need a new manager? Would we even stay in the League? Result Score (League position) L 1-4 (23) L 1-2 (22) W1-0 (16) L 0-2 (19) W 1-0 (15) L 1-2 (16) D 0-0 (17) D 0-0 (18) D 1-1 (17) L 1-2 (21) W 2-1 (18) L0-2 (19) Well, this is how our promotion season began...2006/07...Lambert, Walker, Disley, Campbell, Elliott etc. Keep the faith guys, we're not that bad this season, and as soon as we find a bit of consistency we'll be flying. Even though Buckle probably wouldn't win a popularity contest at the moment I'm sure he's the man for the job. Up The Gas!!
Well that is the first 12 games - what happened after that ... say the next 6 games? It must have been an upward trend, unfortunately we are on a downward trend! And to say we are not that bad, can you honestly see it getting any better? I would love to be the optomist here but for me personally it has been a one way slope, all downhill and I can't see any spark to enthuse me or to make me believe it will get better. I think this Saturdays cup game will be a pivitol point in our season!
I've seen plenty of evidence that we're not far away from having a good run and ending up around the business end. Last season we really did have the worst side in living memory. We look a lot stronger with Gill in the side, and I think that's the area where we need strengthening because we miss him when he's injured. A cup run would be good. I'm certain we'll beat Corby, but I'm sure we won't get any credit when we do.
You have to remember the last time we got promoted out of this division we were 16th with 10 games to go which was the situation after we got beat in the JPT final against Doncaster. Would any Gashead have said that we'd have made the play offs that year? We then won 8 and drew 1 of those games to claim a play off spot. I'm not convinced by Buckle as yet. However with so many new signings I'm still prepared to cut him a little slack, even after witnessing the Cheltenham debacle, but we do need to be more than just consistently inconsistent.
Id love to think we will go on a similar run, but I cant see it with this side. The side we had then were a lot stronger than what we have now. This side do not have the balls to go on a run like that and do not have the balls to get tough and put themselves about. I think 12th this season would be a decent finish. ****ing rubbish!!
Personally I think 12th is (at the moment) way above what we will achieve with this group of players and management. In all the games I have seen this season I have noticed a downward trend - from the friendlies ... to the first few games, right up to the latest debacle. Something has to change because something is very wrong. If the season continues as it is I think we will be lucky to escape relegation!
pardon the intrusion, but there is a longway to go this season, and if i was a betting man i would say the gas will finish above 12th place, possibly in the play offs, together with a cup run. surely it is all down to team morale and confidence and no small element of support for the team and management. who knows the gas may be on the way up. ffs believe it.
and as well the city are at last climbing the league, the least the gas can do is the same. an extra sack of carrots for matty h, sounds as though he deserves them!
With all due respect AJ - you aint been watchin our games this season. After the Watford game I was highly enthusiastic about the coming season, all seemed to be well. Since that game however there has been a steady decline in moral amongst the players, I can only speculate but to me it seems as if they are scared of making a mistake and thus endure the wrath of PB. There have been countless rumours of players falling out with him etc which would only undermine confidence and moral and to me this seems to be the case. There isnt much football being played at the moment, much less than when the season started. The defence looks very shaky and Bevan seems only half the keeper he was 3 months ago, we have no midfield "general" and no goal poacher - any one can have the captains armband should Gill be injured - except last years Captain and Manager! Like I said on several occasions this season is panning out like last season - and we know how that ended up! I want to be optomistic and full of support etc but having witnessed the debacles of Crawley and Oxford away, plus Cheltenham and Port Vale at home and I cant see where we will amass the points to get us up the table. A 2 - 0 win against a very lack lustre Daggers, and even the 5 - 2 home win against Rotherham has, as one of my fellow supporters said "only papered over the cracks"! Saturdays loss against the Stanley who were on a losing streak tells me that things aren't getting better. Only time will tell - with Saturday being a crunch game - it we go out of the cup at home against Blue Sq opposition then I would think that PB will be walking on very thin ice. I hope I am wrong, and everybody can get on my back and tell me so at the end of the season, but unless something changes drastically, we are going no-where near the top half of the table!
I think me and you must be thinking along the same lines Chris! Just as players form a winning habit, they also form a losing habit - just like last season! Personally I feel that if we lose this weekend Mr Chuckle should pack his bags and leave the building with SC taking over until Xmas , New Year. Then have a look at results and the table and see wether we need to panic and man the life boats or wether the players will play for SC? Who knows ... but if NOTHING is done then there is a good possibility that we are doomed! Happy sod in I!
It's really come to something when some of us are fearing non league football as a real possibility Yes, I dont really feel Campbell is the right man to take us forward, but perhaps he could help stop the rot temporarily. I would love to see Peter Reid here, but I seem to be the only one
There is absolutely no chance of SC taking over from Buckle! Some of us believe that he's already undermined Trolls and Penney, and he's been openly disrespectful to Buckle.
how low expectations does buckle envisage. i am with you on peter reid, i suggested him 2 months ago. it is early days yet anyway. we are in 4th place, lord knows how, we have had little firepower up front, narrowly beating accrington 1-0 at home, winning 3-2 in the 94th minute at home to barnet, our finest recent performance is winning 2-0 at daggers playing with 10 men. rhinestone is right i have not seen gas play, but the point i am making is town are a shade fortunate to be where they are. but if ever they start firing on 4 cylinders, look out league 2. finally good luck on saturday at home to corby. there is nothing like a cup run for improving morale and confidence no matter how low buckles lowered expectations, better great expectations as dickens would have it. let us hope the gas have bottomed
I don't particularily want SC to take over if PB goes or gets the push - but in all honesty who else is there? Who could we afford? It is already documented the PB has taken us over the budget for this season, so what would be our options??? The only one would be SC to take over the reigns. I would love someone like Peter Reid to come in and shake the tree so hard that the roots would tremble - perhaps then it would get this club moving forwards ... but in all probability we would not be able to afford him, or anyone else for that matter. I might be talking doom and gloom and I hope I am proved wrong, however I have had a gut full of being optomistic only to be shot down in flames time and time again. There is something very fundimentally wrong at our club, and has been for the last few years - I don't think PB is the person to be able to change it and sort it out ... but what are the alternatives? I have been a gashead for neigh on 50 years and will never stop supporting them, I will be there Saturday looking for positives and (trying) to cheer them on, I will NEVER boo them, however the gloss is getting very thin and I am getting long in the tooth ... UP THE GAS!
i cannot understand why no club has snapped up peter reid. perhaps after the exhaustions of plymouth he is taking a well earned break. anyway now that plymouth are out of admin, he will have recently recieved a fat cheque.. why can you not afford him, he is only moving from one L2 club to another. but it may be expensive buying buckle off
At some stage Buckle must turn the playing fortunes around or admit that he is unable to do so. I hope that he is able to do so, because like decent players, decent managers do not become poor overnight. It may be that he needs to take on board some advice from elsewhere to turn the corner. Things have not gone his way and many on this board would say that he has brought the present situation on his own head. The situation rests in Buckle's hands. He must resolve what is blantantly wrong very quickly or do the honest thing and voluntarily leave in the hope others can generate a revival. Stubbornly hanging around with his head in the sand will do him or the club no favours. Let us hope he can succeed, because that would be the far better option, but please let it be soon!!
