On Monday the 5th September at 15:00 David Coulthard will race a real Mercedes SLS AMG against PlayStation gamers on GT5 in a real time race. The race will be held on a secret test track. It will be a 15 minute qualifying format.

Martin Brundle will be commentating the race along side [NSFW]Jonathan Legard.[/NSFW] The race will be streamed at telegraph.co.uk/motoring

Ridiculous quote from Brundle, Villeneuve never won the title and was miles better than DC, as was Sir Stirling.

I think the gamers will probably win this, racing online is far easier than on track. The physics of games are getting more realistic, but they're still nowhere near the complexity of real life. Also seems completely pointless to me, even if they can simulate the vehicle exactly, they can never account for track temperature, wind speed/direction, ambient air temperature. I doubt the weight distribution and centre of gravity height will be calibrated once DC is in it either. I imagine the gamers will be able to set a time that it will be impossible for DC to match on the day.

Look, for me Peter Collins is the best driver to have never won the WDC, before stirling, before Gilles, the guy had real raw talent for his age and would of changed the course of F1 history if he hadn't died. The only driver to have actually outclass Fangio and stirling could never do it.

Coulthard will kick the **** out of em, though he will be nowhere recognized as much as Stirling moss.

If its them seasonal event thingy's on GT5, I will be competing. (or they may be after, to see if you could beat him or something) I think the nerds will win just because theyre life isnt at risk and can push harder without hurting themselves. But DC has the real thing, which imo is probably easier to handle.

I think the gadget show did something similar to this a few years ago. They staged a realtime race between Jonny Herbert and Jason Bradbury at Silverstone. Herbert drove the car in real-life, Jason Bradbury using the best gaming rig money can buy. On the day, the track was slightly damp, which couldn't be replicated in the game, but Herbert still won, although only just. Bradbury is only a presenter of Gadget Show, and whilst he no doubt practised for this, he wouldn't be as good as these pro-gamers.

I think it depends on the car, and whether theres any unaccounted for factor on the day, such as slightly damp conditions. With the car, if it's something DC is really used to, like an F1 car, and can drive to it's limit, then it's harder for the nerds to keep the same level up, as they won't exactly know the limits the same.

You say that, but these nerds could be proper nerds who do nothing but gaming all day. Pretty much what I did a few years ago with F1:CE (In which I raced a guy who claimed to be an F1 driver [which I doubt he was] and beat him.) I wouldnt be suprised if DC wins, but if I had to bet, it would be the nerds.

One thing that could play into DC's hands is the pressue, he will be used to handling it while the nerds might not be able to handle it as well.

I think it is a seasonal event Fred, so anyone with GT5 and a playstation will be able to compete in the race, although I think there are six competition winners who will be taking place at Mercedes HQ as well.

DC is the best driver to have competed in the post-Senna era and not won a World Championship. On that basis alone he is worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as others who have narrowly missed out, even if we ultimately conclude that others were better.

I have to go for the nerds, because as far as I can tell there will be thousands of them and only one needs to set a better time than DC. But I think it'll be a close-run thing.

On Top Gear Jeremy was 20 seconds worse in real life than on GT4. Gaming is easier by far.

DC like Brundle whilst they may be entertaining as people have never been championship winning drivers unlike sir sterling moss who definitely was.
