David Connolly is retiring from football with immediate effect. A player who was held back by injury...could have been with us for a lot longer if he could have kept fit. Hope he has a good post-playing career.

Great player, and scored some great goals for us, including the 27-pass one against 'Boro. I would love to have seen him play for us in the Prem but his health just wasn't up to it. I wish him well.

Hear Hear....A man who obviously loves his football and he did exceptionally well to make his playing career last as long as he did. Many others would have long since given up with all the injury set-backs.

Always remember him asking the fans to stop the "He's back from the dead" chant.

    Wonderful footballer

A very, very intelligent player. Did well to look after himself and get as far as he did. Really liked him when he was here.

Great striker and intelligent footballer. He had an almost unerring ability to find space or pop up in the right space at the right time.

Reminds me of the L1 days. Shame he retiring but must be approaching that age. Great player played his part in our rise.

Well Chilco reminded me of the 1972 0-7 trouncing by Leeds. So in a little way I'm going to redress the balance and show Saints beating Leeds 3-1 with David Connolly scoring a great goal [right in the inside side netting] too:

His reaction to that away to Plymouth (when we went and all but mathematically secured L1 promotion) will always live with me. As will pretty much every home performance from him in the Championship promotion season.

He doesn't get into my favourite ever Saints XI ahead of Beattie and Pahars (I think most people will be biased towards the players they grew up with as a child), but he certainly gets on my bench alongside Rickie.

I remember that day like it was yesterday! Still one of my favourite games of that season.

    Smashed the cross bar.

Something is also ringing a bell with me that he put the ball in the net after the ref had already blown for our penalty, but that might be me imagining things.

From the League One and Championship years, If in doubt about the score, always type 3-1 into Youtube. :
