Quote from the Times.. Darren Bent rturns to Sunderland on Saturday very bitter at some Sunderland fans, he said that Vaughan Identity was very unfair in calling him greedy. When asked if he will be looking out for this VI fella he replied, I will chin him if I see him.
Daren Bent dui what he was right for himself, we could have matched any offer Villa made but he would have still gone, because someone be it backroom staff, coach, manager or player in the England set may have told him that as long as he is playing at Sunderland he would not get a chance for England, the same would have been said if he was at Newcastle. If Peter Crouch had a chance of an England call up, would have have gone to Stoke without consultation in some way or form with postman pat?
I still think when he calls it a day on his career and it has just disappeared into the masses of other average careers and tit bits on Wikipedia, he will have many regrets about his Wearside adventure. Whatever happened, he was always going to be a very wealthy man out of football and he will be a millionaire a few times over when he hangs up his boots in another 7 or 8 years or so. However, sometimes as with SKP and Marco, players find clubs that just suit them and they make history and forge a lifetime’s legend status at that club. Bent had played for Ipswich, Charlton and Spurs before he moved to us with some aplomb but without any real profile or status. He came to us and burst back onto the scene in spectacular fashion. Both parties were suited to each other and contrary to the thought of England or not England, he DID win back his England opportunity by scoring goals for us. Had he continued to do so he would STILL have been in pole position to take Rooney’s place next summer in the Euros? He also had an amazing chance to become this clubs all time goal scoring legend and in doing so leave his mark on the game. He didn’t achieve that at any of his other clubs and he certainly won’t do it under McLeish at Villa. Darren Bent blew the chance to find HIS club and establish himself as one of the EPL's Hall of Fame candidates. The money would have come to him anyway and he may well have increased his salary with us at the end of the season. Yes he will always score goals as he is a terrific and prolific striker but he will never again have the opportunity to carve out a place in history for himself because he will never eclipse the popularity of famous strikers at Spurs, Villa, or Ipswich and at Charlton does it matter if you achieve hero status? At SAFC he could have been the greatest in our post war history and it’s a crying shame for both parties that he overlooked this point when ****ing us over back in January. Will he win medals at Villa? No more than he would have at us and that’s a fact. Will he be a rich man? Yes but really that much more than he would have been with us? Having 12m in the bank at the end of your career or 9m, you're still extremely wealthy? Will he be a Villa, Spurs or Ipswich legend? No. Could he have been a Sunderland legend? Absolutely. I hope he endures the single most miserable day of his professional life and crumbles in front of us tomorrow and his career nose dives for the rest of the campaign, ending with him losing his England place and missing the Euros. Despise is a strong word but I truly despise this individual immensely and hope his career is ruined - not through injury but through loss of form and confidence.
I think Bruce was spot on when he said Bent would have been an all time legend here if he had stayed.
The bastard is still "November" on this year's SAFC calendar, too. Mind you, Titus is up there as "October" at the minute.
A real biblical theme then Judas Bent on one and Titus the 'Baptist' on the other - or at least thats what I think it said on the radio about Titus?
