Lets hope so Danny boy... because if Barton isnt fit, I think he should start against Stoke, even if it is on the right wing, I'm personally not too sure if he has what it takes be be a premier league player, but I would like to think he could be... Do we think he can do a job?

    Stoke team:

    Harper

    Simpson Williamson Coloccini Enrique

    Guthrie Tiote Nolan Gutierrez/Ferguson*

    Best Ameobi

    *Ferguson if Gutierrez is injured.

Supposedly both Jonas and Jose are doubts, I'd go 5-3-2, where Guthrie will have to play a key role in a midfield 3.

Me too. His confidence isn't there at the minute but a run in the team and I think he will still be a success here.

Can't help but be frustrated with the current crop of Guthrie hater's

Enrique was terrible with us for his entire first season, but there were glimpses of what he was capable of and so we persisted with him.

It's kind of the opposite with Guthrie. He showed great form in his first season with us and now he's been struggling a little bit (Due to injuries + a few horrible games, admittedly)

On his game he's one of our best midfielders and a contender for a starting birth. Having our top assists by a mile in the championship is no small feat, considering he played more than half the season in a position he was visibly uncomfortable in.

I'm glad he's going to try to stick it out with us. If he went to some team like Birmingham or Wolves, he'd be a massive success

I don't think we should do what the mackems did and bow to their ****e tactics and play 3 CBs. We're not gonna beat them at their own game so we should go for pace. Stick with 4-4-2 and replace like for like if players are injured.

Saying i agree with this 100% doesn't do you justice!! Awesome post!

Guthrie has had terrible luck this year, injury's especially. I personally think that his poor few games have coincided with him being slightly rushed back to cover for suspensions.

See I disagree with most of that. Jose came into the Premier League as a very raw and inexperienced full back who made errors dwelling on the ball and not getting rid when necessary (much like Coloccini despite the age difference), but the quality was still undoubtably there. Guthrie was a player sold by Liverpool when they were good to Bolton when they were ****e, and then to us when we were worse. I know theres only a year between the two, but you can't compare Guthrie to Joses quality.

This isn't a knee jerk reaction to the West Brom error, its from watching him for the full time he's been here. I don't dislike him, but I do think he just isn't good enough for the Premiership other than as a squad player, especially when Nolan, Barton, and Ireland can all play the attacking centre mid role far better. He pulls out the occasional good pass, but more often than not plays cross field balls out for throw ins, and is an absolute liability in terms of tracking his man (even compared to Nolan!). Granted his assist tally in the Championship was decent, but I'd be inclined to think he'd found his level rather than finding his form.

Wouldn't object to keeping him, but I'd like to think with Nolan, Ireland hopefully signing permanently and Haris Vuckic coming through we've got better options, especially for a team in the league position we're currently in.

people can't really say he's a good squad player then when the squad is thread bare and we have no choice but to play him say he's rubbish, surely if he's good enough for the squad he's good enough to step up when needed if not he should be sold and someone who can bought.

I'm not a Danny Guthrie hater. I just think that he's back up with at least 3 players in front of him who are better and if he has to play due to injuries etc he's got to be kept off the wings because he's rubbish there.

I never said 'good' squad player...

If we could sell him and get someone better all the better.

i knew you'd think i was talking about your comment I was talking about the numerous comments on many articles where this subject has arisen, and agree he's good in the centre but keep him of the wing he's crap out there.this is why imo the bulk of the 35m should be spent on improving the squad (RW,LB,RB,2xCF)and then get rid of some
