Read today that RA has issued an instruction that over 30s' will only be offered a 1 year extension, no exceptions.
If true, that seems a bit naive to me.
I understand the theory, and agree that the usual 3 years is often too much of a gamble, but surely we need to be flexible and treat each case on its merits.
Is there something about a 2 year extension that I am missing ??

Sorry Purley, what has always been the case ??? Over 30s' only getting 1 year extensions or something else????
Lampard was given a 3 year extension when he was 31. Now he's 34 he wants another 3 years, and Cole who's 31, also wants 3 years.
Personally I wouldn't give Lampard 3 weeks extension, but more sensible fans would say 1 year is reasonable.
For Cole , 3years with his game based on speed is crazy. Lampards 3 years when he was 31, has just about worked out because of his outstanding fitness. But an extension on the same wages until hes 37 ?????? Give me a break. Lamps has had it as a starter. Cole will have had it in 2 years maximum.
So I repeat, surely 2 years is reasonable ??? Or can they go to some ****ty club like LA Galaxy and get a better deal for 3 years, playing at half pace ?? If so , see you later, best of luck.

All policies like this should be flexible and viewed on a case by case basis.
In this case I think 2 would be right but I also see the other side. Players need to be realistic too, will Cole be as effective 2 years from now, doubtful so maybe a 2 year contract but with lower wages in the 2nd year. Would the player take that? Some might some wouldn't.

I'm a big fan of Bertrand who is going to be a great player so if Cole does go to the likes of PSG I won't be too concerned.

Money is at the bottom of it! An extra year for Lamps say, would be another £7m on the wage bill at at time when he'll only be used selectively by RDM! This is all about FFP and rules of engagement in Europe! I can see the logic and if I were running the show I'd have to do the same as much as I love and respect Lamps! The club comes first!

I think this has been in place for a little while now.

I think the players are just being greedy - they know their powers may wane but they want the club to foot a hefty bill come what may.

If they are so confident of their ongoing skills and fitness levels they should be happy to sign a 1 year deal every 12 months.

Tbh if I was RA I'd be happy to tell Cole etc to FO regardless of how great they have been/are. Greedy *astards.

Fake fan??? Don't make me laugh. Club 1st every time. Club heroes also have a responsibility to the club. Respecting a club Hero has nothing to do with simply giving them everything they want, whenever they want it.
Legends are players who do the business AND respect what the Club has done for them, in our case, made them multi millionaires. Run that criteria over the current legends. I think you'll find they want everything going one way only, their way. JT is the exception, he asks for nothing.
Frank should get a one year extension, but he doesn't want that, he wants 3 years !!!! Thats what I said in the beginning. Ashley Cole should get a 2 year extension, I also said that.
    Who's the bell end ???????

I'm of a mind of Zola's exit from Chelsea. We flirted with buying into Calgari to re-sign him and increasing his wage. He declined although still a free agent, yet no one is talking about revoking his Hero status.

It is about FFP. Lampard and Cole not only want the time they want the same wage. When Joe Cole went (a great player carrying so many past injuries limiting his use) he was asking for a wage increase from Chelsea. All the diehards I knew thought that unreasonable, even the ones who'd score him 10 out of 10 each match when at times he had been donkeyesque. In the end he got signed by Liverpool and the same wage he had at Chelsea and in my opinion got played by them roughly the same amount of times we would of. He of course was allowed to go to Lille. This should tell you how right Chelsea were in assessing Joe Cole.

I do not want Lampard and Ash to leave just yet. I do think players go on at the top level for longer nowadays. I also think it is up to the players to prove it constantly as they get older as nobody has a crystal ball. Yes a young player may get a cruciate injury, but they can get back to top form, in your thirties you can't. Would Lamps and Ash take a wage cut and a proviso to have their 3 year extensions annulled if badly injured? I do not think so. It is up to these players to judge if they can get better elsewhere, for the good of their families and bank managers. Joe Cole thought so.

Problem with Lamps is he's not willing to accept a 'lesser' role in the squad by the sound of things, he's still a great asset to have and I'm all for rewarding players for loyalty to the club, Frank's a legend but I think both he and club should be willing to settle something so both can move forward.

Less of the insults please too :)

I don't think Lampard should be given a contract extension but Cole should on merit.

With Oscar and the inevitable spending in January and Summer I'd argue the need for Lampard is slightly less than what it was 12 or even 18 months ago.

As G.Neville said the last thing you want as a near 35 year old is to be say warming the bench, it will disrupt the squad.

Me too. It's amazing how good he is proving to be now he's been given the chance. At a young age PVA was tipped to be the better of the two but for me isn't a patch on Ryan

Then why spend your life on here?
Surely you have better things to worry about: like how you will afford your wage bill of Chelsea rejects in the Championship. Sacking Chelsea fan Hughesssssy won't come cheap

Does every thread have to be hijaked by a queenie??? Are they really THAT obsessed with us. Must really hurt that we couldn't give two ****s about them 50 out of 52 weeks a year.

Thankfully they'll be back where they belong next season and we won't then even have to care about them for the remaining 2 weeks.

They sing about Chelsea every match even when they are not in the same division as Chelsea for 18 years! Sad
