So it seems.

Jack Colback's future will be decided in the next seven days as the midfielder looks for a quick resolution to his contract wrangles – and both Newcastle and Sunderland remain bullish about their chances of recruiting him.

The Journal understands that yesterday was the first day that Colback was officially permitted to talk to clubs about fixing up a new deal, and the Cats’ midfielder was due to make a decision last night on whether to sever his ties with Sunderland.

The Black Cats made a fresh contract offer last week after a fresh round of talks with sporting director Lee Congerton, but Newcastle are ready to pounce with a four-year contract offer if he decides to leave.

Whatever happens, it is likely to be concluded quickly. The player wants his future resolved before he jets out on holiday and will be aware of interest from several Premier League clubs – along with Scottish champions Celtic, who have made an enquiry in the last fortnight.

If he opts to leave Sunderland – and there is still a chance he may walk away despite that round of negotiations last week – then he could be fixed up with a new club before the weekend.

Colback is understood to have been made a final offer by the Cats and it is now up to him whether to accept or reject the deal on the table at the Stadium of Light.

Gus Poyet has been pressing the club to retain his services but there was an element of dismay that he announced the player would be leaving in April when no firm decision had been taken either way. Now that the club are safe and Colback played such a vital role there has been a fresh impetus in Sunderland’s contract discussions, but more lucrative offers may come from elsewhere.

The complicating and intriguing factor is Newcastle’s continuing interest in the midfielder. Colback has also attracted interest from West Ham, Aston Villa and Everton but the Magpies have shown one of the strongest interests in a player who has his admirers among the St James’ Park staff.

The Magpies are looking to France to recruit playmaker Remy Cabella but retain an interest in Colback, who comes from a United-supporting family. Whatever happens, Sunderland’s midfield is likely to be entirely revamped over the summer months

He won't go abroad and won't be signed by the top 6 clubs so he'd be going sideways to a club he doesn't know.

I don't believe he'd go to Newcastle because he does know them <laugh>

All depends on the money, I can see his point of view to be honest, he will want 1 big contract that will set him up for life, football is a short career so I can't blame him. I think as long as we offer the going rate he will sign for us. All the rest is just designed to get the best deal he can.

I don`t blame him at all for trying to get the best he can.
It seems as if he`s been made a genuine offer and it`s take it or leave it time.
I like the lad and I think he`s a good player but I don`t think he`s good enough to hold us to ransom.

If we let this lad join those pikies up the road on a free it can only be considered a balls-up of the highest order on the part of the club.

Absolutely. If we lose him to anybody under these circumstances someones head should be on the block.

Or you could look at it another way mate.

If Colback wouldn't sign a new contract, in the last year, we'd have had no option but to keep him or sell him.

At the start of the season we'd have been lucky to pull in £3/4 million for him. Perhaps less with only 1 year's contract left.

By then he'd played 4 seasons, at Sunderland, and managed 1 league goal, not exactly Jordan Henderson standard.

In hindsight it was better for us to have kept him and allowed him to play his part in keeping us in the Premier League.

We were short of a left back, at the start of the season, and it looked like Cattermole was going.

Colback, at the time, was useful in both positions but in the same mould as Seb & Gardner.

IMO it's only the second half of this season that's made us think better of him and think things are worse than they are.

I can see where you`re going with that Smug, he was played in defence out of necessity, then, when Alonso came in Jack was moved to his preferred position and showed an improvement.

It`s still a waste he could go for nothing but, having said that it could be deFanti cocked up. iirc there was a mention of a derisory offer.

There's only us and Everton who can offer the kind of football that will complement his abilities, and I'm not even sure how firm Everton's interest is. Sign a new contract Jack.

I don't think Everton would be good for him as he wont get regular first team football.
All the scum have to do is find out what our offer is and give him £5000 a week more, fat Ashley can comfortably afford that.
Loyalty is a thing of the past as we all know, can only remember 2 players who were truly loyal to their club, le Tiss at Southampton and Bull at Wolves.
Hope he does sign as he has a fantastic work rate.

Swansea boss Garry Monk wants to snap up Sunderland’s out-of-contract midfielder Jack Colback.

Monk wants to bring in more domestic signings in a major revamp of the squad left behind at the Swans by former boss Michael Laudrup.

And Colback is keen to join them on a free transfer after failing to sort out terms with the Wearsiders.

Colback's wages were low after he climbed through the ranks at Sunderland, and they will not give the 24-year-old the deal he wants.

However, Swansea are prepared to meet his £1million-a-year demands and Monk is keen to push through a move quickly.

That's less thank 20k a week, that shouldn't be a problem for us to match. Can't see his demands being that low.

Really? He's demanding just £20k a week? Isn't that the base going rate for a lower half PL team?

If we are baulking at that figure it doesn't bode well for making quality signings.

Those figures have to be more ****-journo bollocks!!!

Bollocks i say. I reckon he'll be pushing for 35-40k a week but will have to settle for around 25-30k where ever he goes.

Good player that always gives anything from 6-8 out of 10, very rarely hits 9/10 but also never dips lower than 6/10 whenever I've seen him. Should accept though that he'll never be worth more than 30k a week maximum. Very good squad player for whoever he signs for.
