http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-36099522 Well that's a turn up for the books. Are all the celebs who were baying for his blood now going to apologise? Edit. Has to go for re-trial but I suspect will win that one too on the basis of 'fresh evidence'
Probably worth holding off on too many comments because there IS still a retrial. From what I read in the article however, it seems that there are doubts over the evidence used in the original conviction, not necessarily anything new that proves innocence. Had compelling evidence appeared that proved innocence, the retrial would not have been called. Most likely it's been ordered on technicalities of law together with further submissions of testimony rather than anything deal-breaking suddenly appearing. I wouldn't expect anyone to appear online spouting apologies or platitudes, because he's simply gone from 'convicted rapist' status back to 'charged with rape' status...
Yes, in legal terms. Most of those who publically shamed him would probably have difficulty in thinking that way, I imagine. But yes, he innocent at the moment at least.
Shambles of a case. Even if he is found guilty again, which seems unlikely, the fact he's been blocked from working again after doing time is ridiculous. If he was a builder from Burnley it would never have gone to trial.
I don't know if he can or would have any success if he did. Sounds like an incompetent jury more than anything.
inevitable result. I cant see any apologies coming from the celebs as he was still convicted at the time, however i felt the case was dodgy at best based on what i had read and the cctv evidence. hes still a scumbag for cheating as well. In truth only 3 people really know
A complete farce from start to finish. Say what you want about him cheating but his career has been ruined. Ridiculous the original verdict was guilty.
I don't think it was right to allow her ex partners run down her reputation in court (and possibly collect a 50k reward for helping acquit him). He's another Marlon, sooner see Barton back than have him here.
Amazing how £50k can concentrate the mind. No-one comes out of this with any credit but it gives a clear insight into how footballers, even average ones, believe they can do as they please...
This interested me for one reason only. My impression is that it is relatively rare for a convicted rapist (all of whom claim it was consensual etc) to get the conviction over turned in this way. I wonder if he can sue the police for not doing their job properly? I assume CPS has crown immunity? Agree with the other comments. 'Not guilty' does not mean everything was fine and dandy.
An excellent piece in the Telegraph sums up the whole sorry saga... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football...just-how-sick-football-culture-in-britain-is/
For anyone interested in the actual real legal arguments - as opposed to the sad, misogynistic twitter knuckle draggers - this is a very clear outline of the case https://thesecretbarrister.com/2016/10/14/10-myths-busted-about-the-ched-evans-case
