When I was wee, I quite liked Chas n Dave.

I played in a football tournament in Holland as a 10 yr old and the bus driver played their infectious cockney bluesfolk (folk melodies, blues structure in my eyes) almost the whole journey.

I've always had a soft spot for them.

I watched the BBC4 documentary on Friday about them and I think I like them more than ever - I was dancing with my daughters to some of their ditties the following day.

I didn't know Dave Peacock played the bass that was sampled for My Name Is by Eminem, nor did I know he was third generation gypsy.

The fact that he gave it all up when his wife died and the attitudes of the two of them to music and life in general made me really warm to them.

How are they viewed in England?

Do Northerners see them as the embodiement of what they don't like about Londoners and do Cockneys see them as an asset or an embarrassment?

    I think they're national treasures.

To be honest, I think it makes me feel more empathy and akin to Londoners cos these are just common working class lads playing a sort of folk music - the clip of them on Breakfast telly taking ****e about their accents off a couple of privately educated RP speaking goons kind of nailed certain attitudes.

Beer Belly is a classic song - we should have a weegie version - Beer Beely.

    So,

To celebrate the beer in my sideboard or not?

It isnae worth reading to be honest, Hash.

The monastery has decent WiFi but I'm tiring of God constantly having his way with my sludge exit.

Nice post <ok> I don't mind them but think that some of the "novelty" songs they did (Snooker Loopy, the Spurs cup songs etc.) were a double edged sword. They might have given them commercial success but probably also fuelled this idea of them being a cockney knees up combo who are now sneered at by people who think they have more discerning tastes.

I by no means like Spurs but Ossie's Dream is possibly the best football song ever released.

Aint No Pleasing You is an absolute corker - it's a blues song basically (in structure, use of 7th chords and in sentiment) but sung by a white guy in his own accent.

Britain should have more bands like them <ok>

Glad all over wasn't really a football song, though, until the Hull fans started singing it, I thought.

Yep - it was a hit for the Dave Clarke Five in the 60s and then Crystal palace released it as their Cup final song in 1990. Thinking about it, Selhurst park is one of my favourite stadiums to see my team win. palace fans are absolute twats.

Yes indeedie. But as a football song it was brilliant. I am not keen on Palace fans.I haven't met one who isn't a fat mess from the Met.

The Lightening Seeds were far superior to Johnny "imagine no possessions" Lennon and his equally talentless cohorts.

That drummer Best was the lucky one.

And I get puffed out on the disco floor
I can't do me trousers up no more
Me mates all swan about with crumpet
And that gets up my nose

Cos I'm developing a beer belly
an I don't reckon it at all
    I'm developing a beer belly
    Me trousers seem to small
