Thought we could have a thread to look out for the many many plaudits coming in Jamie's direction leading up to this weekends retirement.

Post any articles you come across here <ok>

  2. Kop idol Robbie Fowler believes the greatest battle Jamie Carragher ever won was to consistently fend off competition from other players for his place in the Liverpool team.

The 35-year-old brings the curtain down on his outstanding Reds career this Sunday, when he will captain the side as they conclude the 2012-13 season at home to Queens Park Rangers.

It will be the 737th and final time the defender pulls on a Liverpool jersey before switching his focus to punditry, with tributes arriving from around the country and further afield.

Fowler joined the queue of former teammates wishing to recall their fond memories of the No.23 - and the man who notched 183 goals at Anfield remembered how no rival could topple Carragher.

"It has been a massive achievement when you think of the players that Liverpool have had over the years - Jamie is up there with the greatest," Fowler told LFC TV's new 'Carragher' documentary.

"When he first got into the side, probably people didn't expect him to become the player he was. He was a little bit raw. But we've seen over the years what he has grown into.

"He has been unbelievable in terms of his playing; he's played many positions but he's always excelled wherever he has played. He has never once moaned and he always put the club first.

"I think he should be applauded for that. Many players have come in and many players have tried to keep Jamie Carragher out of the side - no-one has done it.

"One of the better seasons, he played right-back. He has played left-back. But in the last four or five years, where he has been in central defence, he has been magnificent.

"He's not one of these cultured defenders who like to run out of the back and dictate play. Jamie is a no-nonsense centre-half and what you see is what you get. There are no airs or graces about him, he does a job and he does a job right."

Carragher and Fowler shared in one of the club's finest ever campaigns in 2000-01, when Gerard Houllier's men scooped three cup competitions - FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup - in a single season.

"When you've got a player like Jamie, you know straight away that he will see everything and he's not afraid to tell people," the striker continued.

"In his first few games, Jamie would be shouting at the older players - that tells you a little bit of his character as well.

"He wasn't afraid of anyone; if someone wasn't doing a job, regardless of who you were - John Barnes, Ian Rush, myself or even a young kid now that's coming into the side - you could guarantee that he would tell you what you were doing wrong.

"Jamie is very vocal, he wants the best out of players. Like me, Jamie was a big Everton fan, but to get beat by them or to have a bad game against them would be criminal.

"I know Jamie would be in the dressing room and be vocal in there - telling people what you should do, what you're doing wrong and maybe what you're doing right as well. He was instrumental in a lot of things in dressing rooms, and not just in derbies."

Liverpool to the core, manager Brendan Rodgers and colleagues have stressed the hole that will be left by the centre-back's departure - a sentiment Fowler can empathise with.

He added: "Jamie typifies every lad from Bootle, who wants to play football. Jamie has been on that pitch for many years, playing for arguably one of the best clubs in the world.

"All the people from Bootle or Liverpool in general see a bit of themselves in Carra because it means that much to him.

"I don't know what he's going to do after football but he would certainly be a big loss if he doesn't want to continue going down the coaching and management route.

"Maybe he will take a year or two out but he would be sorely missed by anyone within the game and particularly at Liverpool."

  3. Jamie Carragher proved he was a true 'working class hero' on Sunday when he got off the team bus to thank a group of fans for making a banner in his honour.

Banner-maker Andrew Jones and his mates got a shock when the bus transporting Carra and the squad after the 3-1 win at Fulham pulled up and the 35-year-old stepped off.

Carra posed for photos with the lads, who first displayed the banner at St Mary's a few months back.

  4. With more than 700 senior appearances to his name, it was an extremely difficult challenge to condense Jamie Carragher's Anfield career into 10 great moments – but we have tried with a FREE clip for all supporters.

From his heroics on the road to Istanbul and during the 2005 Champions League final itself to his landmark 500th match and the never-ending commitment in between, the No.23 leaves a remarkable legacy.

Find out which unforgettable memories we selected to pay tribute to Carragher by clicking play on the embedded video below (follow this link).

  6. Anfield will pay tribute to a true Liverpool legend when Jamie Carragher brings the curtain down on his career this Sunday, writes John Aldridge.

Carra will get the send-off he deserves and it promises to be an emotional afternoon.

Brendan Rodgers' team talk before the game against Queens Park Rangers should be short and sweet: 'We have to win the game for Carra'.

Every one of his team-mates should be desperate to ensure he goes out on a higher rather than a whimper.

What Carra has done for Liverpool for the past 16 years is difficult to sum up. Sunday will be his 737th appearance - putting him second in the club's all-time appearance list behind the great Ian Callaghan.

In every one of those games he has given everything for the shirt.

Carra epitomises everything that's best about Liverpool Football Club.

At the former players association gala dinner at the Hilton next Monday night he will receive a special award off us to mark his fantastic achievements. It's fully deserved.

Carra has been a stalwart. A one-club man who has shown remarkable consistency over so many years. It's a pity he didn't win the Premier League title as that's the only major accolade to have eluded him but he still boasts a medal collection to cherish.

Of course he lifted the big one - the European Cup - and I'll always remember his great performances en-route to Istanbul in 2005 against the likes of Juventus and Chelsea.

Then who could forget the way he performed in the second and in extra time in the final? He was so important in that amazing fightback against Milan - fighting off cramp and putting his body on the line.

Any aspiring centre-back should get the DVD of that game and study the way Carra played.

On the international stage, he never really got the recognition he deserved in terms of England but I don't think that really bothered him.

Club always came before country for Carra with Liverpool meaning more to him than England.

He has always stayed close to his roots and that close bond with the fans will be evident at Anfield on Sunday.

As fans we're selfish and I'm gutted he's calling it a day. I want him to stick around and play another year as I believe he still has a lot to offer.

But I fully understand why he's retiring. He wants to go out on a high and he's got himself a great new job with Sky Sports.

He was an excellent pundit at the Euros last summer and I've got no doubt he will do really well at Sky.

That will be his focus for the next few years but I'm sure he will be back involved at the club one day.

I wouldn't write him off as a future Liverpool manager. Hopefully that won't be for a long time as we want Rodgers to be successful. But football is in Carra's blood. He lives the game 24/7 and he's the type I want to see coaching and managing.

It's the end of an era on Sunday and Carra will leave some huge boots to fill.

  7. Brendan Rodgers today paid tribute to the 'phenomenon' that is Jamie Carragher ahead of his 737th and final appearance for Liverpool on Sunday.

The 35-year-old will hang up his boots following this weekend's Anfield fixture with Queens Park Rangers - and the boss admits he'll be sorely missed.

Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo: "There will be many things said about Jamie this week. He's a remarkable man.

"His humility and sheer professionalism is incredible. You saw his performance at Fulham on Sunday and for me he can play on.

"He's always wanted to go out at the top and there's no doubt he's doing that because he's a top performer.

"He's never had a lazy day since I came in here. He hasn't had a lazy day since he was eight years of age and he walked into Liverpool. He is a phenomenon.

"I worked with a lot of top players during my time at Chelsea and I've just been amazed by Jamie.

"There is a real sadness for me because he epitomises everything that I want. Jamie has never wanted an easy day and he's an absolute credit to his football club, his family and he's a sheer joy to work with."

Carragher will take up a punditry role with Sky Sports next season - and Rodgers believes he'll prove a hit with viewers.

"Jamie will move on to the media next year and he'll demonstrate his intelligence," added the manager.

"His knowledge of football means he will be a joy to watch. For supporters next year he will give an amazing insight because he is stepping right off the top of the bill to the television screens."

  8. For 17 years he has given his all for Liverpool Football Club, denying strikers, winning trophies and creating memories that will be passed on through generations. Now we are giving you the chance to say #thankscarra ahead of his retirement on Sunday.

Jamie Carragher will pull on the Red shirt for the 737th and final time when QPR visit Anfield for the 2012-13 finale this weekend - and it's sure to be an emotional day for the man himself and all those who witness his farewell appearance.

Over the next fortnight we'll be dedicating much of our coverage on official club channels to a player who will go down as one of our best ever - and you can play your part.

Leave your messages for Jamie in the comments section of this story, here on Facebook or on Twitter (using the #thankscarra hashtag) and we'll feature the best on Liverpoolfc.com and make sure the man himself sees them.

It's been an emotional journey through countless highs and on Sunday it is all coming to an end. Help us give Carra the send-off he deserves.

Well done, famous Everton fan, Jamie Carragher ;)

True pro, deserves all the plaudits and respect. Hopefully his final game is picked up on and not overlooked because of Scholes and Fergie also retiring.

My faviurite Carragher moment would have to be an England one as not a Liverpool fan, Him coming on in the famous 5-1 win over Germany and playing fantastically. Galling that in the 06 WC he scored his pen with a great strike but was forced to retake and missed :(

Also loved him destroying Adrian Durham on talksport! ;)

One of the EPL most consistent defenders and a loyal pro. Hopefully his punditry will be as classy

  13. Guys, I'm dealing with it. I've removed all the off topic posts so please keep it to Jamie Carragher appreciation only. You can discuss other things elsewhere <ok>

PS...it is a little disappointing that I spent a fair amount of time setting this thread up to find the an shambles that awaited me this morning <laugh>

Edit: site ban <ok> (this may make people aware that he was already under the rader on the mod board)

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has hailed retiring Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher as one of the best five defenders the English game has seen.
The Frenchman spent seven years with the Gunners and came up against the dyed-in-the-wool Liverpudlian in the Premier League on countless occasions.
Henry told Liverpool's official website: "When Carragher retires, it will be a sad day for any Liverpool fan and for anyone who likes the game.
"The memory that I have of him is someone who was loyal and committed. You will always remember him as a Liverpool player because that's the only team he played for.
"I have had incredible battles against him. I lost some and I won some but they were always fair and always hard. He's a competitor.
"For me, he will go down as one of the top five. If you talk about how long he has played for Liverpool and what he won there and what type of player he was, he will go down in history as one of the greatest in the history of the league."
