None of our managers have been good with lots of money, and as I've said that won't be an issue as we haven't got lots of money.
His record post Ipswich stands up pretty well actually, did well at Derby (Financially screwed) and left due to a disagreement with the owner selling off players under his nose. Did something similar with Southampton when they had Clive Woodward knocking about, was exceptional at Hearts (albeit in a poor league) until the owner muscled in and then Scotland was a little below average (has anyone done well as National coach of Scotland?) and then took over at Palace and left after 5/6 months and ultimately Dougie Freedman has carried on his work

So, in answer to his record. He has reached the play offs in this division more than any other manager (I think) doing it all with clubs that are financially weak and often on a shoestring. So he isn't a ridiculous possibility albeit one that hasn't pulled up any trees in the past 12-24 months...

And actually looking back at it, he's had relative success at clubs since us.

He did well at Derby but fell out with the chairmen when he sold Huddlestone behind his back. He took them to the playoffs with very little money and adverted their slide down the league.

He did very well at Hearts but again fell out with the board. He left them top of the league.

He took Southampton to the Playoffs.

Didn't do well with Scotland but who has

Palace wasn't a success but he started building a decent team there.

Take away wiki and read the actual press reports and it tells a slightly different picture.

TB, you seem to be a right grizzly bear today. Is everything alright? You're usually one of the more positive posters on this board..

.... Hang on.. Are you Paul Jewell?

King, I dont feel upbeat but I also dont see the strange love affair with all things from our past. Burley was great for us on a limited budget, played decent football, introduced youngsters and was everything I wanted from a manager at that time and these characteristic are great but everybody appears to just ignore his downsides as hes an old boy
Bad with money - not a problem he will currently have
Left 3 of his last clubs with a massive question mark over his character. Accusations of turning up drunk at Derby, Hearts and in Cyprus. ( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/2334050/Burley-sacked-for-not-going-to-alcohol-clinic.html )
Sacked at Palace after 7 wins in 25 matches.

A decent spell at Southampton (win ration 41%) in 2008 is the only spell since leaving us whereby he didnt either fail or have a major failing out. It hardly says must appoint to me.

I always said that I am thinking with my heart and not my head and in reality he probably isn't what we need but we could do a damn sight worse. Atleast this would 'Unite the fans' which no other appointment mentioned would and would restore the 'Ipswich way' - Yes he has his negatives as long as your arm but I'm just trying to objective (or as objective as possible when a club legend is involved) which is something I always try to do on these boards and hope from others

I would agree with that but when I tried to be objective by saying look behind the wiki state you question me, albeit in a friendly way and JWM has a go. Thought objective discusion was the whole point of these boards even though I annoying faiiled in my response to JWM.

Can only echo king, TB, adding every manager out there has his pros and cons.

My questioning was my concern behind the tone of your posts today which is no way related to the Burley topic, just that you have been a bit more negative today than usual. Not a dig or accusation just a question of what was up?

On the other side of that JWM has made some very positive statements that I have agreed with completely so I suppose the world has found it's balance

Nope he left by mutual consent and both parties tore up the contract.

    From the horses mouth:

“I am deeply disappointed that my time as manager of Apollon Limassol has come to an end having only joined the club in May of this year.

“On starting with the club it quickly became clear to me that there was a huge amount of work to do to organise the team to make it competitive with a style of play which the club, the directors and the supporters would appreciate. Unfortunately, this led to differences of opinion on how best to achieve the common goal and it is as a result of these differences that I am leaving the club. I am, however, pleased to say that all issues between us, including the terms of my departure, have been very amicably resolved.

“It only remains for me to go on record and thank the club and the President for providing me the opportunity to manage Apollon and I wish the club and the supporters every success for the future.”

Mike, agree. Just for me stability is needed and a guy who has had a chequered past since leaving us, limited success and a lot of accusations but against him worries me. For me, as king says negatives as long as your arm, is a bigger sway for me than the positives.
KOPR - thanks for asking, nothing really just as I think this is a major time for our club and confidence in our squad or love of our history is potential a major issue

George Burley is the most successful manager we have had in the last 30 years and yet some people just want to concentrate on the negatives! I would have Burley back and would welcome him with open arms. His track record in his 8 years at Town doesn't bare scrutiny, the guy is a Town legend and with a win ratio of 44% is higher than Sir Bobby's! George I believe still has a great deal to offer and it would be madness to dismiss his credentials for the job. The preferred combination would be Burley as a Director of Football and mentor to one of the younger guys that some of you lot want.

I am just astounded that some of you want to focus on the negative which is far out weighed by the positives that he would bring to this club. <ok>

I started this thread more as a 'look who else is interested what do we think of this' without really having too much of an opinion.
Now I say Sod it! Bring back Burley - He is no worse than any of the other name being banded about and I'd have him in a heartbeat especially if the alternatives include Megson, McCarthy or Shearer et al.
Only name that would actually unite the fans and we would see an instant upturn in attendance at Portman Road.
