I'd love to hear that ringing round Portman Road again, I may even go along on Saturday and start singing it myself (even if I am on my own)

Given that he has applied for his old job back, what are peoples thoughts?

I'm not overly convinced although I could think of a lot worse, in fact I'd rather have Burley back than appoint Curbs and some of the other names mentioned, should we 'never go back?' or is he the sort of guy who can turn us around, after all he has been the best manager at ITFC in my lifetime and those really were the days.
I would be worries though that if he didn't succeed he would tarnish his legend status - similar to Dalglish at Liverpool and Gunn at Norwich to some extent as Football has moved on since Burley was successful and although he's a good manager is he right for Ipswich in 2012?

I feel my heart is starting to overule my head with this one!! We need someone to bring the Ipswich back to Ipswich, and he knows what we are about and how to build a club, which we need to do. As with all the names mentioned as a replacement there are positives but also many negatives!!

one thing i will say, is that george burley was never the same after the death of dale roberts. much like culverhouse and lambert, he was often said to be 'the brains' behind burley.

I would welcome George back to Ipswich with open arms. He should never have been sacked by that toff Sheepshanks in the first place. We played the best brand of football under his management than at any time since the early 80s and he lives and breathes the club. Absolutely disgusted at the way he was sacked less than 10 games into a season!

Could be the next stage on the criteria, would not put it past ME/SC to ask themselves who has experience of getting Ipswich out the championship.

and that's not the only thing that would be attractive about him, he did it on a limited budget so wouldn't argue against FFP, he has an affinity with the fans and above all he wants to be the manager.

George Burley as Director of Football and Karl Robinson as manager could work or a combination of Burley with a young hungry manager.

Burley? No thanks. Can I just remind you of Finidi George, amongst others? Clapham out of position for no apparent reason and that second Prem season when he got some cash to spend. Love him to bits but nothing much to bring to the party these days. Yes, he's ITFC all the way but as I said, no thanks.

Very harsh FBI you conveniently forget the superb football we played and the play-offs every year ending up in the Premiership and finishing 5th! **** me lets ignore the fantastic achievements and just focus on the negatives! <doh>

I despised Burley, why? Because he despised us.You could see the hurt in his face if he lost against us and the joy if he won.You could do worse.Where is he now?

But if we haven't got much money to spend..... Which we haven't, George (back then) was incredible at bringing in some fantastic players on a budget. Which is what we would have to do now, no manager regardless of who we sign will be given a seven figure war chest so thrifty managers are what we need.
Not saying Burley is the ideal candidate but to judge him for his poor signings is unfair due to a lot of his cheap signings being incredible for us... and the majority of modern day managers have made questionable signings themselves.
I do think I'm getting overly sentimental but I'm warming to the idea of Burley to bring back 'the Ipswich Way'

I'd love to have Burley back. End. Manager. End. Mills too. Lovely stuff!

Director of Football is not happening, Clegg said yesterday that Marcus Evans has a tight knit group of advisors high in the game so wouldn't entertain the idea.

He wasn't sacked. He managed three games i think and won two of them. I think it was his choice to come back to England.

No, didn't forget. But that was a wonderful promotion season follwed by something I never thought I'd see again, utterly glorious. But it was what happened after that that worried me, how he managed to make it all fall apart by some very curious spending habits and tactics, in the second season. Oh, and his record since then hasn't exactly made me think 'bugger, come back' either.

Not fan of a Director of Football tbh. However I do think we need a figurehead at the club, but not sure in what form. I liked the combination of Sheepshanks and Bowden. Bowden the CEO who just kept quiet behind the scenes dealing with the finances etc and then having Sheepshanks to connect with the fans, make the announcements, have the interests of the club in his heart rather than just a commercial business but not have anything to do with the first team!!

I have to say after seeing all this Burley talk my heart is overuling my head!!! BURLEYS BARMY ARMY!!!

In defense of burley post ipswich career (with the assistance of wikipedia)

Derby - Turned there fortunes around and got them challenging for play-offs
Hearts - Were top of the SPL when he resigned due to Irreconcilable differences between him and Romanov
Southampton - guided them to playoffs, which won him the Scotland job
Scotland - managing a country not for everybody, but even so lost out on qualification due to a 1-0 loss toHolland.
Crystal Palace - cant really defend
Limasol - won 1, drew 1, then left.

I would not complain at his return here at all.
