Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce wants Phil Brown as his assistant - reports

Brown assisted Allardyce for six years at Bolton and the new Sunderland chief is keen on reigniting that working partnership

New Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce wants Phil Brown to be his number two at the Stadium of Light, according to reports.

The pair worked together at Bolton Wanderers, with Brown assisting Allardyce for six years with the Trotters.

Brown, the current manager of Southend United, threw his weight behind Allardyce before his appointment was confirmed on Friday.

“Sam is the man for the job,” said the former Hull manager, a lifelong Sunderland fan. “For me, he is the outstanding candidate.

“Sam has a wealth of experience with a really impressive CV and as an individual I am proud to have played a part given the amount of challenges we faced at Bolton Wanderers together with regards to survival campaigns.

“He inherited a yo-yo club by definition in the 1990s and turned that yo-yo club into an established Premier League club," declared Brown.

“And not only that, a Premier League club which was in Europe when he left.

“For me, without a shadow of a doubt, Sam is the best candidate for the job and, as a Sunderland supporter, I would be absolutely delighted if he was given the job."

Earlier this year Brown talked up Allardyce's credentials, claiming he is a better manager than Arsene Wenger.

"Sam is no coach – he’s more sophisticated than that," Brown said in February. "He’s a statistical genius. As good as Arsene Wenger, if not better."

Dunno, in the first half of our first season in the PL we seemed to be getting our tactics spot on, and then, when Big Sam returned to work, it turned to ****. Coincidence? I think not.

I think Homophobic Phil meant Tactical Genius not Statistical Genius.

Maybe he's talking about player stats, the way it's come up in the last few years, where we know how many miles players have run, tackles made, passes completed etc.

Phil Brown will not accept an assistants role. He deserves to be in charge, and taking an assistants role would be a backward step.

Surely it depends on the money. League 1/2 Manager to Premier League Assistant would be a huge increase I would imagine

I don't think it does depend on the money. I would imagine that Phil Brown could have earned a better living from television and radio work then he would be as the manager of Southend United. It would have been far easier too.
The reason to manage a club like Southend must have been to rebuild his reputation, meaning Southend would be successful ( which they have been) and a bigger club comes calling.

The average salary for a League One manager is only about £100k, he'd probably get four or five times that as Sunderland No.2.

Just maybe he enjoys what he is doing rather than take the backward step to being number 2?
Just maybe he does not "need" the money?

The money would be a lot better at Sunderland but for how long?
Phil Brown would much rather be a manager than a number two.

Surely that would be an admission of failure as a manager.....going back to a job you had 16 years ago

There is also the issue that you should never be involved in managing the team you support as failing in that role is unforgivable

I'm betting with his refusal that shares in tanning salons in the North East have plummeted :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Maybe he's thinking go as assistant, get relegated, lardarse clears off, gets appointed manager, decent chance of getting promotion again. Sound a bit familiar?

I think Mr Allardyce's official nickname is 'The Toad' as named by the 'appy 'ammers.
