..last time we played West Ham Amat played in Britton's DM position while Britton rode the bench.Well things didnt work out to well then , but what about now ? .I think it was a mistake not to play Britton in that game as I think it would be a mistake not to play him on Sunday ,thoughts ....

We played Amat in DM to try and deal with Carroll and Nolan's physicality to the long ball, but it didn't really work. So I think just go with the usual line up. Carroll will beat Williams in the air every day, he's strong (but not stronger), taller, and jumps/heads better. As long as we put Bartley on Carroll to match his height and jump, we could do alright in that respect. I expect us to score, but it seems that Carroll and Nolan always find a way to score against us.

So, I think Britton should play. It's a game that we've typically always struggled in, so if Monk manages to get a win in this one, it will really show that he's learning and is able to out-think a variety of other managers. I naturally expect us to lose this game as teams like West Ham seem to really rattle us - they play long-ball, but not loosely, they do it well and accurately. I'm more worried about Carroll than I was about Sakho and Valencia.

I feel the trick is not to beat Carroll in the air , its to beat whoever hes heading it toward to the ball and Leon is the right man for the job.A single CB going up with Carroll , the rest waiting for the ball to come down to their other players. Also , Nolan is semi questionable for the game , so even if he is starting he wont be 100 %. Imo.

i don't like to much chopping and changing in order to try and combat this or counteract that. We should be playing what we consider to be our best side and let them worry about us. We are more than a match for any side with whoever they play or what ever formation they play.

Completely agree! A single CB to stay tight on Carroll so he can't bring it down, and two defensive midfielders (Ki and Britton) to anticipate where he's flicking it. If Nolan doesn't play or isn't 100% then that is excellent news! My worry is that Monk decides to play Shelvey instead for some physicality... Britton is the tick to our tock, so when fit, he's my first name on the team sheet!

aswan - I can't work out if you're patronising me or not :emoticon-0105-wink: I'm so used to defending myself on this forum that I've built up too many barriers to accept a potential compliment!

This is a good test for GM as to his tactics and how and who he plays. But saying that surely we can't play as bad as last year.

9 Losses and 2 draws in our last 11 games in all competetions against West Ham . We haven't scored a goal in the last 300 minutes played .against them .Besides Everton , West Ham are the team I long to beat the most .Monk has his work cut out for him., but regardless of who he starts I think he might be the one to break our bad streak .I dont want to beat West Ham ...I wanna hammer them ....

We'll need to beat him in the air if he's heading the ball into our net from a corner though.....

Its also about stopping his supply as best we can. Looking on a whu forum they don't want him to start and think they have more than enough with out him to turn us over.

i remember chris perry used to always nullify big duncan ferguson by leaving him jump and mop up the second ball every time he played him

I'm sure when we played Stoke under Brendan we put Joe Allen on Peter Crouch. We let him win all the headers, but if he tried to bring the ball down, Joe was immediately snapping round his heels.

This . we're beginning to get a well earned reputation for being an attacking threat along with a solid defensive unit. We need to consider who we're up against but not to the extent that it hinders us in trying to win a match.

Agree Dai. I'll be more than happy with a point. But, if we play to our best, we will win.

We have the potential to win but so do west ham. I can see a low scoring if any at all game. fat Sam has got them playing good football and if our defence stays true then i think we will cancel each other out and finish 0-0....
