Evening Standard reports that he wouldn't commit his future to Fulham in discussions with Magath and failed to answer calls from him.

Now if that's the case the club did follow the protocol. The rest is history!

It's a valid point, Bidley. Personally I don't doubt that Brede gave everything he was capable of. The problem is that for the last year to 18 months he hasn't seemed capable of the same level of performance as he used to be. That's why it's the right decision to let him go. It is a big shame that, wherever the fault lies, he's left feeling badly done by.

Brede has been exceptional for Fulham over the years and I'm sorry to see him go. I read his twitter page last night and it says he wants to stay in England and ideally London. Last season was not his best and I can see from the Clubs point of view that he needs to be moved especially if on £50K a week. Rather sad ending though.

How long were the club supposed to be able let him keep his options open for before letting him go. It does seem odd that we didn't put him up for sale instead of letting him go. Strikes me there is more to this than meets the eye! Why lose out on a fee for him, however little?

This is why I'm highly dubious that Brede got the £3m pay off mooted earlier in this thread. I suspect we don't have to pay him much at all, so by releasing him via this clause (rather than selling him and having to part subsidise his wages) we have cost him a fair whack of change.

That might explain why Brede is upset, but it still does not excuse the terrible PR from the club in handling this situation (and specifically managing the fan reaction).

Found this report from the BBC of 13 years ago. Not sure whether it exonerates the Club or the reverse and not learning from mistakes.

"Fulham defender Terry Phelan is furious that the club chose to announce their decision not to renew his contract by letter.

But the Craven Cottage outfit insist they were simply following Football League regulations. Club spokesperson Sarah Brookes said: "It's a Football League requirement we write to the players before the third Saturday in May to explain the club's position regarding new contracts. It was the club's obligation to write to Terry to inform him."

The 33-year-old former Wimbledon, Manchester City and Chelsea defender joined the club in February 2000 on a free transfer from Everton following a loan spell at Crystal Palace. He made 16 appearances last season, but after the arrival of Jean Tigana, the former Republic of Ireland international was restricted to just three first-team appearances last season.

He received Fulham's letter just two days before his wedding last Sunday and labelled his treatment "a disgrace".

I could be making this up but wasn't their reports of a manager being sacked by text message a few years ago? I'm thinking Cookie/Sanchez?

I know Blackpool sacked Paul Ince by text. Don't recall us ever doing that though.

Also Gus Poyet was sacked while live on the BBC.

The two managers I know about were:

Bobby Robson who read he'd been sacked on an Evening Standard billboard at Putney Bridge station; and

Jimmmy Hogan when he was in hospital having his appendix out.

Martin Jol was sacked during a UEFA cup match while at Spurs, and the fans in the stadium knew about it before he did, as I recall.

I actually believed we had done something similar to/with Jol after the Cardiff game when he left the pitch a tad weepy. Unfortunately unfounded belief.
