Do people think he's lost interest, or is it a fact that he never truly was interested? Were we just a pawn in a game that might have benefited Liege or St Truiden? I agree. It's like an ego thing. Unless his reputation begins to be affected then he won't be fussed, which is presumably what made him get rid off Standard? That's why I favour the lobbying approach.
How do we get thru to the 75% of Charlton fans still going to games who are - aged over 65 - still struggling to come to terms with an abacus. Saga Holidays could have made a killing in the West Stand on Saturday. Serious point though - how do we stop the Oldies from going ?
As I said, it's an individual decision. Having achieved the 65 mark a couple of years ago I will probably be a target for your derision. I don't intend to listen to anyone who tells me whether or not to attend a football match, and I won't tell anyone else what to do either.
I don't think it's an age thing. There are seemingly many younger fans who believe in ''supporting your team, no matter what''. They are still excited by the thrill of an away game, and having pre and post match beers with mates.
The point is that you have to respect someone's decision, regardless of whether or not you agree with it. It's only Vol who worries about age anyway.
I'm 25, and I'd never dream of boycotting a home game. Sure there have been games over the past two years that I've been forced to miss and in the event I ended up not being bothered; something that as recent as 4 years ago I would never have thought. But missing a game on purpose, even for a rationale motive like a boycott, is not something I could do. As soon as I do that they've won. At the moment the footballing side of the club is dead to me, however I still go every week with my dad. We still do the same drive, the same walk, see the same faces and make the same jokes; do the same stupid bets too. Charlton is much much more than football for me, and I suspect for most others too. It's excruciating what's happening - I couldn't sleep Saturday night - and I will do anything I can to overcome this. But I won't stop going.
Groan It's that sort of "not me, guv" apathy that has got the Club in this mess. It's not offensive to point out that our remaining fan base is unnaturally old, don't be so defensive.
You're clutching there, Nick. What got us in to this mess is a whole catalogue of mistakes. I wouldn't even know where to start being honest.
There is a difference between 'telling other fans what to do' -FHB, and getting organised against the owners like Kish is doing. I fully support Kish and have signed his petition. It is undeniable that our fan base is disproportionately old, caused in the main by losing a generation of fans at Selhurst. It is also undeniable based on my experience going back to the 80s that Charlton breeds a particular brand of quisling fans. 30 years ago I remember our Supporters Club passing motions about the quality of the sandwiches at branch meetings while the Valley was padlocked. My observations about the complacent old farts in the West was based on being amongst them. They go for the social and out of habit, but they just happen to pose no threat to a negligent owner.
FHB - please don't think I am trying to slur your support in any way, you are a true Charlton man (Caledonian Branch) I just think in this case there is a fine line between telling what to do and organising. Didn't you try to Boycott games when you cohabited with the Nigel's at Selhurst (surely a match made in heaven)? And say half of you do Boycott the games - would anyone really notice that The Valley is a quarter full instead of half full? Baring in mind the noise volume will probably be the same, i very much doubt it
