The return of Kate Bush to the stage.
Quite an arty performance by all accounts, but none of the old classics/favourites played
(bit of a shame that - given it would have been a perfect link to the 1979 Hammersmith Odeon gig) .

Don't you know ice aids recovery?

Getting a little tired of these ice bucket challenges to be honest. Half the people doing them wouldn't be able to tell you what ALS stands for, or in all probability the effects is has on the body. The other half are most likely not giving a penny to charity and are merely doing it for a laugh.

Similar to the 'no-make up selfie' which emerged a few months ago, these social media challenges are basically a self-gratifying way of people gaining a little attention from their peers, or in the case of celebrities, selling themselves to the public. Charity should be a personal and private thing, which you don't gloat about or publicise to anyone but the taxman. What's more there are thousands of other worthwhile charities out there who get totally overlooked when this obsession with one particular cause springs up. Not to mention the waste of clean water and ice - two valuable commodities to millions of people around the world and targets of charitable giving in their own right.

I agree. It wasn't a popular opinion when i expressed it though, oh well.

Yes there are those feelings of "preaching your own piety" about the ALS ice bucket stuff.
AFAIK, ALS is one specific form of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) .
And of course in the UK we already have the greatest advert for MND awareness in Stephen Hawking.

Would be interesting to do a challenge that involves giving up actual time.
Say a blood donor challenge along the same lines.
Methinks you would find a lot more "celebs" donating the cash rather than doing the challenge.

Here's something else that won't be done for charity: Food critics cooking for chefs.

Depends what you mean by old? Songs from Hounds of Love 1985 (aka the greatest album ever made) are prominent I believe. I will report back on the show next week if wanted. It will probably go on a while!

"Depends what you mean by old?"

Well an immediate hint was in the "1979 Hammersmith Odeon gig" part ?? :)
Hounds of Love is not "year zero" for Kate Bush you know.

I am very aware of that. Was a besotted teenager in 78 and am a besotted old man now. Hounds of Love/Sensual World/Red Shoes are classics albums. She may be a bit long in the tooth for James and the Cold Gun and Babooshka now!

Gilmour attended last night, so a proper rendition of Wuthering Heights was possible. :)
I am disappointed she did not do Them heavy people, The man with the child in his eyes.

I believe that the original challenge was to donate $100 to the ALS charity, or to have a bucket of ice water poured over your head. Whether this means that all these 'slebs' haven't donated any money, and would rather make twats out of themselves instead, I'm not sure!

The only one of them who seemed to understand was that loony Charlie Sheen. He tipped a bucket containing $10,000 over his head and then announced that we donating it to the charity.

The other thing I'll have to say - most people who live in the real world are limited to the amount of money they can give to charity every year. I'm sure like me many of the posters on here are bombarded with sponsor requests from friends and colleagues on an almost weekly basis and not all of these can be supported adequately or proportionately.

Given these limitations, people should take a more active interest, and be more discerning into which charities they donate to, rather than choosing to donate to a specific charity because someone said your name in a video and then got cold for a couple of minutes.

    Rant over :)

I was nominated last night by my Auntie and best mate to do the challenge, I've already donated to the MND foundation - something very close to another mate of mine after which unfortunately he lost his Mum to it earlier this year.

I will be taking the challenge though, as silly as they seem it has been helping to raise a lot of money for the causes and so if it helps in any way possibly by persuading any of my mates to donate etc, I'm all for it. I think I read somewhere, may have been on wiki, that one of the foundations raised around £60m in 2013, yet in just one week this August, it raised £10m.

I do hate the people who are doing it for attention and popularity however, such as trying to get retweets on Twitter or a like on Facebook, by all means post it on your social media sites but do it with the right intention, make sure you persuade and inspire others to a) donate and b) help raise awareness.

That may be so SoS, but how much have other, equally deserving charities suffered as a result of the blinkered focus of the public on one or two charities in the spotlight? I'm sure it's unquantifiable but I would suggest it's not insignificant.

Of course I applaud any donation which is made to a charity closely connected to you and friends.

Fully see what you're saying here mate and I'd be the last person to want any other charities to suffer from the exposure of one or two, hopefully none have in terms of lack of donations but of course it's impossible to tell. I don't want to glorify the idea of doing "funny things" to boost one or another charity's exposure but I try seeing the positive light in that a charity has been able to profit from humorous acts of the public in which it may not have profited from before, even though technically it shouldn't need the general public to partake in such activities to donate but this seems to be the world we live in.
It's a touchy subject to say the least.

When I worked in The City, I travelled in and out of London Bridge station. Everyday there were 2-3 charities collecting. If you gave to all of them, you'd be broke inside a month. So yes, you have a choose who you wish to donate to, and regrettably, ignore the rest.

Our former coach Chris Ramsey, who left the club when Sherwood was sacked, has joined the England under 17 set up.

Ramsey, who previously worked for our Academy for many years, has every qualification under the sun, yet seems to work best with younger players. His time with our first team was a disaster, he simply found it completely different and difficult to put his ideas across to adults.

He is a nice guy and I wish him well in his new role.

Hello everyone - I've not posted for quite a while now. But isn't it a great time to be a Spurs supporter.

Apparently Kate Bush was fantastic last night - but she is also guilty in my opinion of singing the worst track on any album I own - "Mrs Bartolozzi" someone only has to mention the words Washing Machine to send me into a frenzy :)

Good for Chris Ramsey. Start to take the England kids forward on basic technical ability.
