Despite the fabulous 5-1 thrashing this year- Kevin Nolan's hat-trick etc, and the 4-1 away mauling we gave them, the Pedro hat-trick in 3-1 win, Emre's and Liam O'Brien's free-kicks the best memory comes from 1969 for me.
A schoolmate who's dad supported the Mackems took his son and I to Joker Park to watch the last game of the season.
I was 10 at the time. My schoolmate begged me all day to go with them.:emoticon-0102-bigsm
They played Liverpool and in the 86th minute Chris Lawler scored the only goal of the game and sent the Mackems down to the old second division.
I think they missed out on staying up by 1 point.
There was a deadly silence in the car going home......priceless

Yep, I was there. The only time the police divided the arrestees into three: Sunderland, Gillingham and Newcastle. Strange atmosphere though. The Mackems seemed to accept before the start they were going down.

When we beat them 4-1; we were so close to being the ones who put them down. If they were a little less ****, we would have <laugh>

When we won 1-0 at the Stadium of Light and Dabizas scored the goal, as it was my first derby victory and the first time I'd seen us play there.

This just defines hilarity, how can you be the top team if you were beaten 5-1 and had to get a last minute equaliser against us, tbh boro are better than you infact gateshead are better than you

When they went down under monkeys heed/howard wilkinson on 19 points and where supposedly in administration (Sorry for the spelling), was only a kid at the time, but it was sheer quality for thaking the micky out of them, even better one was when they went down and broke they own record in doing so, absloutly priceless!

Defo the 2-0 in the play-offs at Sid James. Gabbiadini - 2-0! Cue pitch invasion :)

here's a tip for you instead of coming on the toon board and looking like an obsessed bitter monkey why not start a thread on the unwashed board called ' best mags memories' and slag us off till your hearts content

Because (a) I like decent craic and can usually get it on the mag board as well as the boards of other teams and (b) unlike you, I don't routinely adopt a 'slag-off the mags' type attitude. Just because you can't see past your own "bitter monkey" routine is your problem chum.

Undoubtedly the 5-1, they were so arrogant and confident before the game and I just couldnt stop laughing as the 5th goal went in...

Almost topped by their spectacular revenge mission this month, they looked like they couldnt give a **** about the biggest game of the year <laugh>
