Anyone else read Hamer's interview for the SLP? Absolutely infuriated me. After our great support on Saturday (as well as the subsequent thanks from BWP), this twit decides he wants to moan about our fans sighing or groaning when mistakes are made. Yes, he's right, we do have a lot of moaners, but what on earth does he expect? We grew used to being fans of an established Premier League club, we spent 7 years there recently then in a matter of two years found ourselves falling into the footballing abyss of league one. He knows **** all about how that feels. As fans, we should be commended for continuously supporting the club - The Valley averages around 16000 attendances for League One games, despite it being our third year in this league, and despite having finished lower and lower in the league(s) for the past 7(?) years. We also constantly vocallyi-support the team home and away, and sing the names of the vast majority of our players. I don't exactly rate him as a player, and now I dislike him as an individual also. Apologies to those who think I've been a bit over the top, I'm sure some of you will
He seems to have problems with shots close to him (like Robbie did with shots from outside box) he could have done a lot better with the Bury and Franchise goals IMHO. Then he goes and pulls off some fantastic saves? Think this interview makes him sound like a bit of a whinger!
He annoyed me last tuesday; Cedric put it out for a throw and then Hamer just tore into him for not passing it back. He seems like a careerist footballer to me so...
Yeah, bit of a nonce moaner. Get shot of him in close season - would love to see Fraser Forster down the Valley TBH.
Yes I think you are being over the top, reason being as this was in fridays SLP originally, BEFORE saturdays game...and the comments were made last TUESDAY night after the Rochdale game, you know, the day the fans booed going 7 points clear at the top.
think its a bit ironic to question a goalies attitude. you need a bit of personality and presence to be a top keeper IMHO. the same character traits that give him the confidence to berate defenders and come for the unclaimable balls into box...well you should allow him a bit of outspokedness. rate hamer...best keeper since Kiely.
BlockMAddick, I didn't realise the interview was conducted prior to Saturdays game so I retract my bit about our support on Saturday. Though you mentioned the fans booing the team, this keeps being brought up and to me at the time, it seemed the fans were booing the final whistle being blown NOT the players (who were subsequently applauded for ten minutes as they left the pitch). Calydon, yes a goalkeeper needs to have character and a certain attitude, as well as be somewhat bold and confrontational, but they also need to learn to control it - screaming your head off at one of the clubs youngsters for playing it safe (the Evina comment mentioned earlier) and complaining about the fans is not the way to go about things. I strongly disagree that he's the best keeper we've had since Kiely, even in recent years I'd say I had more confidence in Rob Elliott, and Darren Randolph was arguably a stronger keeper, though Hamers distribution is one of the best I've seen.
stu get up the road,,,,it was thomas myhre and yes he was good but played about 20 games or less carson? are you joking me. he is useless. forget his ability to save one on ones. if i go in goal at Pitz i can save a few shots...because im on my line the whole game. same with carson...flatters to deceive. we let in a lot of goals and got relegated. he was rubbish at west brom also. WWOCB - randy ill give ya. class keeper...cant believe we preferred elliott. he was given so much leeway due to his charlton connections. but he is a useless keeper. if he goes on to make more than 200 first team appearances ill buy everyone on here a drink
Not read the Article. Undecided about Hamer. I was really impressed by him at the start of the season but his flapper spell worried me. He's been better again the last couple of games but jury is now out. I don't have a view on his personality/character. That said, I'd be disappointed if he started having a dig at supporters. As to our previous keepers I must say Carson was the best I've seen since Kiely and I'm very surprised at the extent to which his career has gone off the rails since he lest us. I thought he'd be a big thing at Liverpool. I liked Randolph and agree that he was very badly treated. Never rated Elliott. Sorry.
www.southlondon-today.co.uk/Sport.cfm?id=7406&headline=Ben There's the article if you wanted to have a read ybab. I know many didn't rate Elliot but I thought he was decent. His positional sense wasn't great (which often showed when he conceded long range shots on his near side), but every game he seemed to pull off wonder-saves. Its odd, most of Hamers strong points were weak points for Elliott and vice versa; Hamer - great distribution Elliott - poor distribution Hamer - poor handling Elliott - decent handling Hamer - makes few 'wonder saves' Elliott - made lots of 'wonder saves' Hamer - never gets away with timewasting Elliott - got away a fair bit with timewasting Hamer - moans about the fans Elliott - loves the fans All my opinion of course an I'm sure many will challenge them
I think hamer gets better week by week an excellent keeper who can make the step up to championship level.
Can't blame him for having a little dig... it did sound like there was a chorus of boos at the team at the end of the Rochdale game, which is shocking given our position. A lot of folk did stay back to applaud for a long time, partly because they were reassuring the team that the booing wasn't the majority opinion. Frankly the Rochdale game was worth the admission fee for Kermit's free-kick alone. Elliott vs Hamer goes to Hamer for me, he let in a dodgy one against Bury and dropped a couple in the previous home game, but generally he's been very solid, and definitely feel his distribution, shot-stopping and especially positioning are well ahead of Elliott.
check out his "pass" to leon clarke on around 80 mins. now thats well directed hoofball. think he is in the top 3 players of the season. seriously impressed by ben hamer
It's really hard to compare a keeper (Hamer) in a superb winning team, behind a watertight defence, but in L1 with another keeper (Carson) in a struggling team, in the PL. In the PL we were under attack all the time, and facing world class strikes, whereas in L1 Hamer often has little to do, and is facing mainly lower division journeyman strikers.
Can only deal with whats in front of him at the time, judge the next level when we get there! ENJOY........
