The draw has been made for the first round of the League Cup and Pompey will be visiting Home Park for a tie week commencing 13th August [assuming we still have a club by then!] I remember standing at the Barn Park end for the same fixture 14 years ago, when Pompey came away with a 3-1 victory, in what was the 1st of 2 legs in those days. I didn't have to travel far as I was living in Plymouth at the time. I think it will be a lot closer this time, with Argyle's home advantage possibly giving them the edge. I know the early rounds of this competition tend to be very poorly attended, but what sort of crowd do you think will turn out for this one?
It's a decent draw for Argyle but I regret the battle of Ports thing tends to be more historical these days with only the old brigade remembering how it used to be. We have a torrid record in all cup competitions for years now so I don't think we will be favourites by a long shot. If the crowds were as once was for this fixture then the place would be rocking. My guess is 8000 at best but I hope I'm wrong and the place does fill up. Think Pompey will still exist by then.
Should attract a good gate as always rivalry and not encountered for many years if I remember? The worrying thing about getting to the PL as far as "smaller clubs" go is that they seem to get in deep money problems if get relegated. So in my opinion any club must have a decent gate capacity in order to compensate any cash problems in future. So any news on HP development?....if required should not be too much problem to build second tier on existing 3 new sides if arise.
I'd imagine the would be high for Plymouth, which should at the very least help ou financially a little. We'll bring a big following as we usually do, and i hope I'm with them. Nice tie, can't wait.
Step back in time....... when I started watching Argyle Pompey were the big rivals and always will be for me. Hopefully a good turnout as both clubs could do with some pennies at the moment. As for their survival fingers crossed it would be a shame if the number 2 dockyard didnt have a team.....
