Home Sport Football Football News Arsenal transfer news: Shock Joey Barton move being weighed up by Arsene Wenger
Jun 19 2011 by Tom Hopkinson, The People
ARSENE WENGER is *weighing up the most astonishing transfer swoop of the *summer ... for Joey Barton.

The Arsenal manager has finally accepted the need to inject some bite and experience into his team of perennial underachievers.

And the Newcastle bad boy’s ability to tick both boxes means he is very much a candidate for the Frenchman. Wenger has been *discussing Barton with senior members of his staff.

And while he was a *footballing pariah when he served a jail sentence for assault in 2008, Barton is believed to

have kicked his drinking habit and improved his battered reputation on and off the pitch.

Wenger must now decide whether or not to follow up his initial interest with a firm offer for Barton, who is available for around £1.5million.

The midfielder has one year left to run on his £65,000-a-week contract at Newcastle but he has been told he will not be *offered another deal.

So the club, who last week parted with Kevin Nolan, are open to offers while they can still get a fee.

And despite his repeated desire to stay at St James’ Park, at the same time Nolan left, Barton admitted he would have to consider a move himself if a Champions League club came knocking.

He said: “I don’t want to leave Newcastle, my family’s settled in the area, I’ve got a great working relationship with everybody at the club.

“But if someone came in and, hypothetically, offered me Champions League football, whether I’d signed a five, six or seven-year deal at Newcastle, I’d have to consider it.”

Wenger has promised new signings will be made this summer – a deal for £12m-rated Lille and Ivory Coast striker Gervinho should be wrapped up soon – as he aims to end the Gunners’ six-year run without a trophy.

Makes sense that these sorts of stories would surface after the press picked up on his Champions League comment.

Still think he'll honour his last year personally. At the very least delay the transfer til after the derby. I just know he won't be able to resist trying to put one over us again, and if he is instrumental in the derby, he can at least leave with the fans' approval.

This + doubt it will happen because of his bad relationship with many of the Arsenal players (Nasri , Diaby , Wilshere...)

Half the Arsenal team probably don't like him, so I'd be surprised...

To be honest I think the article is crap, but I hope if Joey moves or any of the others, I won't hold it against them if the team they move to is in the Champions League...

They can **** off for £1.5 million. He's worth 10x that. Especially if Henderson is worth £20m

A very wise move by Wenger, if it's true.

I was actually thinking of this earlier in the season. Either Alan Smith or Barton would be perfect for Arsenal. Scotty Parker too

They certainly need a bit more English steel in their ranks if they ever want to win anything in England.

Alan Smith! So he's not good enough for us, but he's good enough for Arsenal?

I'd honestly be very surprised if Barton went to a Champions League team, both Manchester clubs and Chelsea can afford better, leaving Arsenal as the only possibility and if I was Wenger I'd persevere with Song and Wilshere until a better alternative comes along rather than sign Joey. He's good, but Champions League good? He's not even played central midfield all season to make a call on it, Parker would be a better short term option.
