Wenger wants the away goal rule changed in the champions league so that it only comes into effect after extra time. Personally I'd go one step further and do away with it all together. Just have extra time and penalties.

It really is pointless nowadays. Back then in the day it was necessary but now IMO the game has evolved beyond it. Of course some will jump on this and say Wenger is making excuses despite being asked about it in an interview and this being his stance on it since at least 2008

I just think that the two ties are fair enough anyway, both teams have to play home and away, so there's no advantage for either. Adding the away goal just adds a huge slice of fortune for one team. Take our games, both teams won a game and both teams scored 3 goals. Why should Monaco be rewarded with progression for scoring 1 more of those goals away, when you could argue that Arsenal should have been rewarded for keeping a clean sheet away.

Similar story for Chelsea (although you could argue that they should have gone out simply for being a ****ish team ) neither PSG or Chelsea won either of their games, they scored the same amount of goals in each game and yet PSG went through.

Extra time and penalties is a much fairer way to decide it.

Maybe the away rule goal sucks, maybe it doesn't, the fact is that before this tie the away goal rule counted, so that's what really matters. This just sounds like an excuse, we knew the rules of the game and that was that.

Secondly if we were the ones going through thanks to away goals, I hardly doubt anyone would complain, but we're complaining because twice we have now been knocked out in 3 years by away goals so we find a convenient excuse to start complaining about. Again, we all knew about the away rules, so just get on with the game, and don't **** it all up when you're at home, which is what we have done. No ****ing use in playing the game and knowing the rule and what u have to do, and then say afterwards oh well get rid of the away goals.

I actually agree with @PISKIE on this however, the team knew what the rules were before the Monaco games and they just have to accept that the inept first performance is why we were knocked out. There is no justification for conceding three goals at home to an inferior side who had scored four goals in their entire CL group. We can only blame ourselves.

It's also worth nothing that had we gone through on away goals, I'm not sure if Wenger would be making the same comments.

He was asked about it in an interview and he's maintained a position against away goals for quite awhile now so I'm pretty sure he'd still advocate against them regardless.
Though tbf had we not lost the interviewer may not have asked the question to begin with.
Still we ****ed up the first leg and have ourselves to blame but please UEFA ET and Penalties will do just fine.

The last time he was on record saying it was in December 2013: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/dec/21/arsene-wenger-uefa-ban-away-goals

Conveniently this was several months after we had gone out of the CL via the away goals rule against Bayern Munich, so at that time, it was our most recent Champions League Last 16 result.

I don't think he actually has mentioned it for quite a while and the main reason why he's never mentioned it too much before was because prior to the last few years, we have not been on the unfortunate end of getting knocked out via away goals in the past. I could be wrong as I can't recall all of our results from previous Champions League knockout stages under his entire tenure, but it's no surprise to me he's been more staunch in this view since, in two of the last three years, we have been knocked out by the away goals rule.
