We have amassed an average 13 points from our away games from 12 games. West ham 24 from 13 and coventry 3 from their 12. Our 13 points puts us 14th in the table on away games. 3 teams have scored more goals than us away from home and only 7 have conceded more. Do you think that we need to shore up our defence more away from home as the current way clearly isn't working.

The other three that make up the top 4 (West ham, cardiff and boro) are all in the top three for away games.

Home form is usually better than away form (except West Ham) but I can't see why the difference is so great for us. We aren't scoring as freely as we were, so letting in a goal or 2 is disastrous, so shoring up the defence is essential.

Sometimes I think stats don't tell the whole story, from what I've heard (my job and location mean I don't get to many games) there have been at least three away games (I'm thinking, in particular of Leicester, Cardiff and, more recently, Brighton) where the perfomances have been a lot better than the scorelines suggest.

Again, I'm only going off listening to the games, match reports and what's said on here after the games, but it seems that in each of those games, on another day, we could very well of ended up getting 3 points and suddenly we've got 22 points on the road and no-one is mentioning our away form. But that's football, a referees decision here, a world class save there and it turns it on its head. You've just got to try and keep that level of performance up there and hope that, over the course of a season, it evens itself out.

I'm not saying there isn't an issue away from home (I think the general feeling is that, on the whole, we haven't been as good as perhaps we could have been) just that sometimes the stats don't tell the whole story.

Stats certainly don't tell the whole story. Where I come from (F1 and motorsports in general) you'd think Sebastian Vettel was way better than any other driver. They do however give a general idea of what's going on, basically that Saints got off to an incredible start to the season and then stalled a few weeks ago mainly through injuries. We have possibly the best set of players in the league but not enough depth and a problem with away fixtures. This will be rectified to some extent in the transfer window but it will take time for things to settle down again. My guess is that although we are all hell bent on promotion this year it will be a tough battle to hold onto an automatic promotion place now that the pack has caught us up. The good news is that the stats are still on our side, being top at Christmas, and the bookies still have faith in us going up.

Apologies for an opinion from a non expert in football (and probably stating the bleedin obvious), but avid Saints supporter.

The only thing you can take from F1 is that Vettel is way better than Webber because the cars make so much of a difference.

I think our form home and away has suffered over the past 5-6 weeks. our style seems to have changed form moving the ball around nicely to a hoof to Lambert from Fox.

Not sure why. Lallana has been trying to take on too many players too.

Maybe Guly was having a massive influence on the style from the right?
