Bearing in mind everything that's been said, what do you think would be too much to refuse?

On the other hand, would he want to go? Come to that, where would he NOT want to go?

Even if the club decided to take it, it would still be up to him.

Nice to see the sentiments though. <ok>

What would a replacement cost, bearing in mind you'd want at least as good if ot better?

As was said on other posts, we don't have a natural replacement for Whitts, the only person that can be said of in the front 6.

With that in mind, not at any price......

.......unless the Giggs rumour has any legs.

Which is more than Giggs has!!!!

    Good post Sparks.

I think anything upwards of £5m would have to be tempting to the club although is the Ransom thing still hanging over us? If so then a large percentage would go to Ransom. That in itself would be a great encouragement to turn aside all but a sky high offer of, say £10m. It appears England born players still attact a high premium over foreign imports, for example, what would Michu have cost the Swans if he had been English?

But as Sparks alluded to, Whitts is loyal (a rare characteristic amongst footballers these days) happy and settled here (as his his better half) so why would he want to go other than to a top 10 Prem club where he would be guaranteed a starting place?

Just a thought, Arsenal say they will back Wenger with cash in the transfer window. Might an alternative be to swap Whitts for Ramsey? Different types of midfield player, would Ramsey want to come home and step down (if only temporarily) and could we affor his wages? Also, I haven't checked but are Arsenal still top 10? <whistle> Discuss!!!!

    Hes going nowhere in January.

Cardiff are probably paying him the wages of a mid table Premier League club anyway.

If we dont go up this season I still think he will stay. If I was him though id move. Hes too good for The Championship.

i think i read somewhere that he's signed either 3 or 4 contracts since malky arrived, as hilts says he will be on a massive wage for a championship club, he's certainly getting paid what he's worth to us. in my opinion in the premiership at a small club like reading or wigan he'd be just another squad player scrapping against the drop for an eternity, here he is the key player, and thats the only positive i can think of staying here, we also have a high chance of going up and doing better than the likes of southampton and reading have done so far....

because of the amount of money invested in him in terms of signing on fees and wages the minimum we would see as acceptable would be £5m, in reality thats a touch too high for what he is, and so he'll stay here.

OK - I'll answer my own question.

Unless he's got a trigger point in his contract that will enable him to talk to an interested club, Malky and the owners will rebuff approaches other than for a sensational offer - and that's far more than £5M.

That would be peanuts compared to the rewards for going up, and they see Whitts as core to that ambition.

He may be on high wages for the Championship but even that's just an assumption. He will obviously be well paid currently, but his subsequent contract wages for the next couple of years could be heavily dependant upon this season's success.

Anyone with remotely the same ability coming in to replace him from the Prem, and let's face it, there just ain't anyone outside it, would want his pockets lined right now.

A player plus cash deal could be stuck, but what does a little immediate cash mean to our owners? Bugger all is the answer.

As Fergie said about Charlie Adam, his corners are worth that alone.

His inswinging corners are one of the most leathal weapons in the division. We have a system that works with them and those goals have been key to us getting to the top of the table and they'll be just as important to keep us there.

He doesn't want to be sold and shouldn't be for any offer. If we're a Championship club in June then that position might have to change but tbh and as is said above I think Whits will be with us next season whichever league we're in.

This team is built around Peter Whittingham and it would take someone special to replace him. Every player has a price but Whitts would require a crazy fee this season to even so much as lift a Malaysian eyebrow.
