I remember reading this article last year when we signed him as a 16 year old. Ive often wondered what happened to him. Sound like he had a great game tonight, so we could have an amazing talent on our hands....

    http://rokerreport.sbnation.com/2015/5/26/8661481/sunderland-sign-one-of-swedens-greatest-talents

Sunderland have signed 16-year-old Swedish striker Joel Asoro from Brommapojkarna on a four-year deal.

Asoro had been interesting Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Juventus, Everton and Red Bull Salzburg but after visiting several of the interested clubs, and training with both Manchester United and Chelsea, has decided that his future lies at the Stadium of Light.

    His agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, explained why his client had chosen Sunderland,telling Swedish newspaper aftonbladet;

We have carefully gone through all the options and Sunderland have certainly shown that they have a plan to make him a Premier League player in the future. This really feels like the best option. He will move to Sunderland with his mother.
The striker, described by Cetinkaya as fast, skilful and a 'fox in the box', has already undergone a medical with the club and will be expected to join up with his new academy team-mates at the start of pre-season training in July.

Was a fine finish and an unselfish assist. Think most young uns would try and make the shot so great decision making.

I was very impressed with how lively he looked. He made a lot of good runs and never stopped floating across the forward line, keeping their defenders busy. He's a proper footballer, you can tell he understands the game. That is something that Watmore is still working on.

Great read Tees. We probably take in, what 5 to 15, 20 kids into the Academy each year?

I guess all you can hope for is just one gem out of them.

I'd love to see this young lad come through and earn his place in the first team.

Mrs BM and I went to see Sweden play England when the U17 championships came to Baku earlier in the year. I remember watching this lad play the England centre halves off the park and score a couple of crackers. I was more surprised to hear the next day he was on Sunderland's books; he replicated the same energy and decisiveness tonight......the future is bright for this lad!

He was getting touted as the next Ibrahimovic when we signed him. I forgot his name so until tonight I was wondering where he was.

Pace with a football brain. That's how I want Watmore to be. That chip near the beginning was sublime.

Joel Asoro paid tribute to his team-mates and the travelling red and white army following a night to remember in Evian.

The 17-year-old lit up the Stade Camille-Fournier as Sunderland battled to a 3-2 win over Dijon FCO, opening the scoring with a superb solo finish before dazzling down the right to assist Wahbi Khazri’s first goal of pre-season.

An under-18 regular, the Swedish sensation was superb for David Moyes’ side and when he exited the field of play with 63 minutes played he received a standing ovation from all in attendance.

Speaking post-match, Asoro admitted he had to pinch himself after walking off the pitch and hearing the club’s new manager congratulate him on a job well done.

“You don’t always get opportunities like this so I’m happy I took it and even happier I scored,” said the 17-year-old. “I wasn’t expecting it but like I said when you get the chance you have to do something special, so I just tried my best and hopefully that was enough.

“I got an assist as well but I have to say thank you to the lads because they’ve helped me a lot in training and told me what to do, and it’s easy to come into the group because everyone talks to everyone and there is a real togetherness.”

He continued: “The manager just told me to keep on going, not be content and to keep doing my thing.

“I was surprised and humbled by the fans [when they gave me a standing ovation], so I have a lot of love for them and I’m surprised they’ve come all the way over here to France.

“They probably hadn’t heard of me before kick-off, but they have now.”

Looks a fantastic prospect, better than Watmore in terms of a talent with a certain 'je ne sais quoi de football'.

Looks ideal to fill Jermaine's boots in due course, if he stays injury free and head in check.

Great to see some of the youth getting given a chance pre season.

Likes of Greenwood, Gooch, Honeyman, Robson (x2) and now this lad.

It'll be doing the lot of them the world of good training alongside the experienced pro's such as Defoe, O'Shea etc.
