Special Screening of âQuadropheniaâ on 28th July at the Portobello Pop-Up Cinema in Aid of the Campaign to Save Cookeâs Pie & Mash Shop Posted on July 16, 2012 by Finney Following Mr Justice Wilkieâs ruling against the local authority at the Royal Courts of Justice in May, last month Hammersmith and Fulham Council hit back by issuing compulsory purchase order notifications to the Goldhawk Road traders. This now means that the case goes before the Secretary of State via various stages including a Public Inquiry. On Saturday, 28th July, the Portobello Pop-Up Cinema is putting on a benefit screening of âQuadropheniaâ. This special event is in aid of the campaign to save Cookeâs Pie & Mash Shop. The screening will be introduced by a special guest, the filmâs Director, Franc Roddam. The Portobello Pop-Up Cinema is located under-the-motorway, 3 Acklam Road, W10. The entrance is from the Portobello Road and the nearest Underground Station is Ladbroke Grove (3 mins). Buses: 7, 23, 52, 70, 452. Most events are priced at £4 and tickets are obtainable at the door on the night. Start time is 8pm and refreshments are available. What a great name for a cinema; The alliteration would be even sweeter if they called it the Portobello Pop-Up Picture House as it would have been called in my day. If I lived in London, I would be there for that showing; hope they get a full house.
I have to say that I didn't know the situation with Cooke's was so advanced. I'm Shepherds Bush born and bred and my first pie and mash in there was when I was about 3 - enough to say that The Beatles were not yet a household name at that time. Cooke's is simply part of the fabric of the Bush and H&F as usual are simply not listening to the will of the public. Bringing this back to QPR business I just hope Mr Beard is as good as everyone says he is when it comes to taking on these little Hitlers when we try to move to a new stadium.
Whats happening with Cookes then as I live down on the coast and they trained me how to make pie, mash and the secret recipe of licker. Gutting.
I was In there last week and it was very busy. As I understand this case is due to be heard in the high court and I suspect h&f will get there compulsory purchase orders approved.
i will be there i grew up in the portobello road and my family have been going to cookes for a century makes my blood boil that our heritage can be ripped away from us by these twerps
Cookes for me.. my grandad used to sell broken biscuits in shepherds bush market so if he did well we had jellied eels in there there also used to be a good pie mash shop next to the fleapit in portobello road (it is now the electric cinema) that was in the 50's and 60's and my family were all totters so i have memories that are rich i have heard Cockneys is good too but i think it is more recent so i havnt scoffed there i dont like too much change not that i am an old git or anything i used to go in the Harp cafe in Uxbridge Road as a kid in the late 60's and Rodney Marsh and the Morgan twins and all the team used to eat in there every day after training places like that have history and you cant buy it
