Maybe it was the best option. A dog running loose on a dual carriageway was run over and killed by traffic police on purpose because of fears it would cause a serious crash. The North Wales force said the decision to destroy the animal was not taken "lightly" and that it had been hit at sufficient speed to ensure it did not suffer. Several attempts had been made to catch the dog, which was running in and out of high-speed traffic and causing vehicles to swerve on the unlit A55 in the early hours of Monday. The dog bit an officer that had tried to grab hold of it. Chief Inspector Darren Wareing said several calls were received by the control room shortly after 3am. He said: "The only safe option was to run the dog over at sufficient speed to ensure that it was destroyed and would not suffer. "Other methods of destruction were considered, but were ruled out on the grounds of public safety." Ch Insp Wareing said: "One car and an HGV had to swerve to avoid the dog whilst the officers remained on foot in the carriageway. "The potential for a serious collision was present throughout, and in the circumstances there was no alternative way that officers could contain the dog and minimise risks to motorists." He added: "Both officers have their own dogs and did not take this decision lightly. "Due to the seriousness of the incident it needed bringing to a conclusion quickly for the safety of all concerned.
cops were going to be damned with either way with do or don't -albeit it's a non story in whole scheme of the media worthy 'news-reports' that go unreported nowadays
But using a car as a lethal weapon maybe a new tactic that could be used against human unsavoury elements..
Definitely the right decision - I've seen the results of people swerving to avoid hitting a dog and being hit head on instead! Amazing what the brain does in that situation "Animal in the road - Oh I'll avoid that but not worry about the consequences of anything else" Well done to the police IMO
I bet those 2 guys felt like **** after doing that. To deliberately kill it must have been an awful decision to make. It looks like it was the correct decision taken after what sounds like quite a long time trying to save it.
Funny how the animal lovers all say that the dog was murdered. I wonder how they'd feel if their partner/wife/husband etc was driving with the kids in the car and they swerved to avoid the dog and it wiped the family out? Some people have absolutely no perspective.
I'm an animal lover and I feel the Police took the right course of action here, after making several attempts to save the poor thing. As an animal lover though, it does upset me that the Police can take this course of action with a dog but yet couldn't have took the same action with Lee Rigby's killers?
Diddles deemed it not news. But people do feel for mutts.. I have no hesitation in saying ive wiped out loads of the things. this was the right choice
It's funny that these "dogs lives are as precious as human lives" are saying little about the fact that this was a dog from a hunting kennel - so a hunting dog. Not exactly sure what it hunted but why value this dog over whatever it hunts?
My mates farm sheep dog went missing in Kendal and he was told it had been knocked over on the A591 by the time he got there it was about an inch thick and about 10ft round so not many animal lovers on that road.
