Reading the thread about people leaving early started me thinking about when I have been most angry at a game. The one that really sticks with me was Brighton at home way back in 81. It was a Tuesday night in December and I think we would have gone top for the first time in our history with a win at home. On paper it was a home banker but in typical Saints style we then go and lose 2 - 0. Wouldn't happen now under Nigel! There was something about that particular game and the moronic Brighton supporters that really got to me that night and I have hated Brighton with a vengeance ever since! What/who has really wound you up and why?
I remember many frustrating moments in the couple of years before our relegation to League 1. Particularly a 3-2 home defeat to Barnsley, after having come back from 2-0 down only to concede again almost immediately after the equaliser. And I think it was in the same season when we played Plymouth and their players were dropping like flies and we had about 9 minutes of first half stoppage time. Thankfully we won that game, but during the first half I was so bored I wanted to go home.
Our last season in the prem. 2-1 up against everton only to throw ut away in the last minute. Was seething for days
Totally with you there. Walked away from the stadium feeling like we had been stuffed 6-0. Had a good feeling going in to the match, didn't panic when Beatts scored to put them ahead. Then we got the lead and Crouch took a shot. Keeper punted it up, route one. I can remember like it was yesterday the net rippling and the Everton fans going mad. I have never walked away from a game where the crowd was almost silent, as we all digested what a win might have meant. The main feeling though was of sadness, although Crouch took some flak for not just running down the clock.
For some reason i remember blaming our keeper (was it smith?) for not just standing tall and saving it! Although that may be harsh thinking about it now! The villa result that season also rankles!
I was never angrier than in the last year of the Lowe era. I actually walked out of a game at St Marys after about 20 minutes into the second half as I was so angry with the crap on the pitch and the way our club was being wrecked by the infighting. If I had not had a season ticket I doubt I would have ever attended another game of football I was so mad.
Kind of similar to your story but for me (being 18) and not remembering too much of the Lowe era in detail it's Bristol city! When they constantly strolled on our board flaming, claiming they'd still make playoffs and we'd be lucky to make them. Really wound me up and since I have been hoping for their relegation.
Think mine was Saints M'boro in the last season in the Prem. I think we led most of the game then they scored 2 really late goals to either tie or win the game. Edit: http://fussball.wettpoint.com/en/games/220741.html That's the game
FA Cup v Man Utd 3-0 defeat 2009. Never have I despised so many of my fellow Southampton supporters. From average gates of 13k to a near full house because of the oppo. Then some of these 'fans' had the Gaul to shout and have a go at these poor kids on the pitch. I was ashamed
Has to be when we were 3-0 up to Leeds at home only to lose 3-4. Since then i have always hated the last ten minutes of games knowing that the old Saints would have thrown a lead away. This team we have now i think the opposite. More likely to score again than concede.
The angriest I've been this season was the injury time winner against MIlwlall in the cup - so blatantly offside it was unreal
Season we went down from the championship. Two matches stick out the losses to Forest and Doncaster I think. There was just such a toxic atmosphere at the club. And it just made my blood boil going every week only to watch the tatically inept performances from a load of promosing kids who were put in far to early. Also we always seemed to get a 1 0 lead that season just to chuck it away the contrast to now in such a short space of time is unbelievable.
Burnley away the year we went down. We were 3-0 down within 12 minutes, the night after i had said we haven't conceded that many early goals and that 'we never score own goals'. Sure enough 1 of the 3 was an own goal.
The season we got relegated from the PL was the most frustrating to me. Many of the players had their own personal agenda rather than wanting to win as a team. Several times we threw away points trying to score after 90m with a lead instead of trying to run the clock down by holding possession in general or near the opponents corner flag
Redknapp called it naivety. I called it being plain stupid. We had some pretty unintelligent players back then.
For me it was a combination of stupidity and selfishness at first, and then as it went on it could only have been selfishness as it must have been brought to their attention. Either way it was unbelievably frustrating.
On reflection one of the times I have been really angry was the first leg of the Championship playoff against Derby when they deliberately set out and succeeded in Kicking Kenwynne and Gareth out of the game. Both were gone injured by half time and failed to make the second leg. You are not really suppossed to hate people but boy I still dislike intensley that nasty little Scots git who was their manager.
Just to bring the debate full circle, re: leaving the game early, I remember as a kid being really pleased when the Dell used to empty a little bit, because I could see more of the game. Standing was great if you were tall enough. Of course, eventually I was.
