If the Bale deal to Real Madrid goes through it will probably end any chances we have of getting Townsend. (If there ever was a realistic chance)

We all need a lift before Saturday I feel, and an announcement on any new signing (Austin please) would be most appreciated.

They only have til noon tomorrow to sign and be eligible to play on Saturday.

I agree we really do need a boost.

My opinion is that Harry and co know perfectly well what is required but it is the supply chain that is the problem. Proven strikers of the calibre required to play for us (and by that I mean low enough calibre ie not RVP etc) are not exactly plentiful.

Worrying times but all we can do is trust that TF's tweets are true and that they are working like the clappers to sort this out.

 

It sounds like Austin is supposed to sign today, after all it is Thursday!

Our next signing will come out of the blue when we least expect it. TF and Harry have learned their lesson.

 

24 goals frmo 37 games last season. Surely this is where TF just throws enough money to do the deal?

I can understand the caution after last year's debacle but this would be a shrewd move and worth the extra mil or two that would see off Forest or any other club.

I think we are unlikely to gain promotion in the way that Warnock did with what he had back then. Some sensible funding is required.

 

We have a couple but we need more, I could have saved TF millions by telling him not to sign certain players.

Even Warnocks misses could have done that although she must have been on holiday when SWP and Barton signed.

 

i was thinking this about townsend but then they signed another winger if he was not getting in the squad last season whos to say he will know.

 

Agree RTID, it's been reported we're after a loan move for John Guidetti from Man City if the Townsend deal doesn't happen.

 

Was he washing your car or weeding your garden at the time?

Queens Park Rangers are closing in on the signing of Burnley striker Charlie Austin, Sky Sports understands.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp is keen to bolster his attacking options and has stepped up his interest in Austin after missing out to Norwich for Gary Hooper.

Redknapp is a long-term admirer of Austin and talks are thought to be at an advanced stage between both clubs about a deal for the 24-year-old.

Austin, who scored 28 goals last season for Burnley, saw a proposed move to Premier League new boys Hull City fall through earlier this summer.

Since the breakdown of the Hull move, Austin has gone on to play in the last four of Burnley's five friendlies and scored twice against Sparta Rotterdam.

Burnley are resigned to losing their star striker with Austin entering the final year of his contract at Turf Moor and QPR are hoping to win the race for the former Swindon hot-shot.

Andros Townsend will look elsewhere for regular first-team football if he is not given that at Tottenham, with QPR rumoured to be interested.

The 22-year-old has only made 18 appearances for Spurs since signing professional terms in 2008, while he has been on loan to nine different clubs during that period.

The most successful spell came last season at QPR where he scored twice in 12 appearances as Rangers were relegated from the Premier League.

And now, Townsend has had the taste of regular top flight football, he is looking for more.

“I think I either give it a go at Tottenham, get more game time, or look to move on a more permanent basis,” Townsend said.

“I’ve had nine loans now. I enjoy going out on loan because it means I’m playing games.

“I’m not young anymore – I’m 22. In football terms, I’m getting on a bit and I want to play sustained football on a permanent basis.”

During the pre-season campaign, Townsend has played 45 minutes against Swindon, an hour against Colchester as well as 20 minutes against Sunderland and South China, scoring in the latter game.

One of the main reasons for the wide man not being given his chance has been the form of Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale, and head coach Andre Villas-Boas admits it will be difficult for the England under-21 international to usurp the pair.

“Andros did extremely well in QPR for a team during a difficult time,” he said.

“So we have allowed him to come back, he’s enjoying pre-season, he’s showing great motivation to stay in the team.

“This is what you want from young players coming through.”

“For young players, if they are talented enough, if the talent is high, the best thing they can do is beat that competition.

“He’s competing against Gareth, he’ll be involved in the nomination for the Fifa Ballon d’Or, so Townsend has a difficult task ahead of him but he is the player he must beat alongside Lennon.”

Bale appears set to leave White Hart Lane for Real Madrid with the two clubs locked in talks over the Welshman.

But Townsend believes he has more of a chance of playing for the first-team if the forward stays.

“I think Gareth Bale is playing more down the middle anyway,” he added.

“It gives me hope that I can try and break through this season if he continues to play down the middle.”

Were Townsend sign for QPR he’d be reunited with Harry Redknapp, who gave him his Lilywhites debut and he revealed how the two compare.

“Harry Redknapp, you know what he’s about,” he explained. “He’s a man motivator. He likes to play free-flowing attacking football.

“As you saw from the years at Spurs, it was attack, attack attack.

“With Andre, his attention to detail is unbelievable. I was in his office [towards the end of last season] and he had every single session that he’d done this season in a massive, massive book. His attention to detail is amazing.”
